Valuation Advice - Cabby Clipper

Hi all,
I can't work out how much to punt our Clipper at when it goes up for sale shortly. I look on here, Pistonheads & Ebay and prices vary wildly from sublime to ridiculous, so please advise.

Clipper Cabriolet
1989 F reg
113k
Recon engine from Volksworld a few years back.
Mohair Hood a couple of years back. Dealer fit e/windows.
Recent new Weber carb, coil, alternator, battery etc.
Immobiliser with certificate.
Lots of service history and original manuals, plus service book has never been written or stamped in.
JVC CD player with CD changer
Full MOT & 6 months tax.
Has original clipper wheels with good tyres. Sportlines will be selling seperately.

This isn't a for sale post as we are using the car for a couple more months before the wife's bump gets too big, but some guidance on value would reall be appreciated for when the inevitable happens.

i put my cabby up for sale every year when its motd just to test the water.

j 91 plate
metallic green
mint and unmolestered
full electrics
98k miles (now)
loads of services history
the kind of golf that has folks knocking at my door to ask if i want to sell it…
how much for mine ?
i want ?2400
wont let her go for less that that. i'd only want something like it again and thats less than i'd spend to get one.
needless to say i still have her…

watching the ebay prices wont tell you what the car is worth
but will tell you what people are prepared to pay

I think the first bit of advice is not to sell till warm weather makes a return. Prices for cabs do vary according to time of year, get new mot then that will maximise your return.

As for value it does all depend on if there is any rust in the normal places, under wheel arches, spare wheel well, inner wings, filler neck,  etc.
Most people will use the buyers guide available on here as a guide and come and check.

Thats why photos dont really give the best guide to a price as they simply wont show that. But that aside the ones advertised around 2k ish, or under seem to sell. The ones over 3k seem to hang around for ages, unless a rivage or sportline. You can ask for what you want, just depends on how long you can wait for a sale.

I paid under 2k for myn, which was low number of owners, low milage backed up by all recpts for work and service book. But needed filler neck replacing, front mounts changing and has quite a few scratches on paintwork, rot free.

There's got to be a definite ?500-?750 premium for a GTI over a Clipper, I reckon. Then it comes down to condition, anything from ?0 to ?2500 is probably fair enough. I'd say mileage and year aren't that important any more, except if exceptionally young or low mileage (but then that would be reflected in condition too, right?)

Maybe its time for a cabby price guide as well as the hatchback on, since half the club is made up of cabbys.

The only problem with cabby price guide is that the price varies so much depending on the time of year you want to buy or sell, i personally would say that the gti would have a certain amount of price increase over the clipper aswell

small number know this diff between clipper and the gti we also have the crimbo channel debate, they are all worth what we will pay and not a penny more, fore and against, sod vw they made there money years ago

I think its difficult to put a price on a car you havent seen, someones description of 'mint' can be anything mine selling a 3k was probably ovepriced for its age and milage but sold at the right time at the right place so…. like he said worth what someone will pay you find the right person and your on to a winner  :D

I think the whole clipper gti is eralavant dont think that affects price that much i know for younger dubbers insurance companies prefer carbs to injection so when i was first looking i opted for a clipper generally less molested as well i find.

I don;t think you can dismiss a potential price difference between a 90bhp carb car and a 112bhp car - the GTI will be more valuable, if otherwise the same condition. In the favour of the Clipper though, it doesn't appeal so much to boy racers as the GTI - so you'll often find ones more looked after. But then, thats condition, not spec!

hmmm fair point.

I'm liking all your input and also would say thet I can understand the GTI will always be more appealing and command a higher price.
Had a chat with the missus and she says she doesn't want to sell as the car was a pressie from me
Had a look in the history and has every MOT from 3yrs of age and the engine was from Volksparts if anyone has heard of them.

Anyway, we will cross the subject again when she starts maoning about no power steering, so maybe the price guide with seasonal adjustment will be up and running.

Not so easy to say what i paid for my clipper. Was a P/X with my very tatty Skyline, reckon i probably got it for about ?1500. Felt i maybe overpaid a little but fell in love with it as soon as i was offered the deal and really wanted shot of the mega moneypit before anything else needed replacing!
Had a few liitle probs to iron out from the off but has obviously been looked after over the years and only one area of rot found so far which would need a new drivers wing to sort (no hurry though as it is hidden). Needs roof done but hoping to get that done earlyish this year, have one in waiting but not sure if i can be assed doing it myself and fitters up here are a bit short on the ground   :(

Will probably put it for sale at an optimistic price early summer and see what interest i get. Not that i really want to sell it yet but if a good offer came along then there are plenty other cars i want to own before i die!  :)
