Trailers

Has anyone made a trailer out of a Mk1 before?

If so, any photos anyone?

I imagine it's hard to do, is it?

One like that.  Perhaps for camping in?  Would be cool.

It'd be cool to make a Mk1 trailer perfect size to put a double airbed in, with a few lights inside and electric points, and the fuel hole could have one of those big camping electric hookups in it.

I'd love one to match my car..

i'm pretty sure the law has changed and there are loads of rules about what you can and can't do! i don't think your aloud to modify a car axle into a trailer anymore :banghead:  you could just say you bought it and it was made befor the law changed though!

I would like to be wrong, but thats what i've been told 8O

Where would the problem be in using the existing axle?

This is my plan, 2 door with a beer tap and uprated rear axle.  8)

Dubboy, could you tell me about an 'uprated rear axle' - i.e. what it is?

You can buy made to measure axles with various weight ratings here:

Which type would you want for a trailer (I've really no idea), and what is the advantage over a normal Mk1 axle?  Surely the rear axles on Mk1s can take a fair weight?

The rear axle rating is around 600kg depending on model.

The advantage of buying complete new axle is you get the brakes and should be more straightforward to connect to the A frame.

Ahh, thanks a lot - becomes so clear!

Good luck for your project, and please let me know how it goes!
