Can't recommend them enough - towing on a rope is daft when you can get a bar so cheap. Also means the towed vehicle shouldn't have to brake and won't run into the back of your car like it could on a rope. :y:
Oh and tow off the standard tow eye. If you can't I'd get/hire an A-frame (provided you have a tow bar).

Bent his bar up and done this to my doner car.
The bonnet was already muffed
His car was fine but i had to drive 70 something miles in that one

You can't, at least not to transport a vehicle. They can be used for recovery, to a place of safety.

Its not me you need to convince! Don't rely on internet forums for correct answers on it! Do your own research, use Google, motoring organisations, whatever, after all its your a$$ on the line if you get pulled and get a fine, or crash or lose control, etc.
