Time to hang up my Mk1 boots????

I think the time has come to get rid of my Mk1 and all paraphinalia? :cry:

Contributing factors are:
Time
Money
Weather
Family commitments
Locality
 
It just seems I have no time anymore to work on my Mk1, and because it is my daily commute, I hate driving it in this weather!!

It really needs to be stored up at winter, but I dont think I can afford the storage anymore as we are planning on buying a house in the new year, and starting a family?

I've come over all sensible thinking about selling the Mk1 and getting an Audi A4 or Passat? 8O

I love driving my Mk1 and the smile it gives everytime I destroy newer cars at the lights  :wink: ,  but I'm getting old now and have to start thinking SENSIBLE!!!!????

been thinking of selling up and getting a fiesta

the cab sits in a garage all winter which i cant afford and when it does come out to play it costs a fortune for the up keep

up to you guys, you can always get another one in the future. i've just got my first mk1, and i'm no spring chicken, .

Just get rid of it and get something that will be more practical for you and the forthcoming family as has been said you can always get another one later and maybe even buy someone else's completed project for a 1/4 of what they spent to build it thusly saving you the headache and expense.

I know I'm looking to chop mine up as it has stolen a year of my life with no reward.

Yeah for pratical reasons it sound like a good idea, but I know I'll miss it!!

But I bet when the time comes to buy another one, I wont be able to afford one as the price will have probably gone through the roof by then????

If you have space, buy a car cover, declare it "SORN" and get
a cheap runaround, you can pick up a Polo etc… MK2 golf or similar
for peanuts… try this before getting rid of it? (if you can).

I only use / work on mine when I feel like it, as Family commitments
work,other cars.. weather, mean it is near impossible to use it weekly.

But I do find it a handy "distraction" when housey/work things get
a bit too much…….mine spent a year in "bits" and its only been back
on the road 4 months, and its needed, radiator, water pump, thermostat,
bulbs, I could spend every weekend on it, but "too much of a good thing"
and all that……… its currently waiting for me to do a CV joint now…. .

I'd just use it and enjoy it I know you have to make sacrafices for familys but sometimes you can't just get rid of everything that's you or else you can loose track of what you're all about..

Just compremise, I own a RS1600i Escort that went from everyday use, to garage, and it's now covered only 10k in 8 years, which kinda defeats the point in owning it… 4 years ago I took it off the road to 'tidy up', yet it never returned….

I have had lots of Dubs…only ever owned vw`s all my life…every few years the desire to change up to something newer/faster/more sensible comes along

my Lhasa mk1 was sold to help fund a Rallye, the rallye was sold to fund a VR6……….I currently still have the VR and its a great car to drive, its comfy, fast (enough) smooth and reliable, it costs a few ? in fuel if your heavy footed but its been very reliable, I also have my mk1 sportline, which is definately a  second car, i couldnt use it all year round, its nice to drive and has been 100% reliable the year i have had it.

I think you have to do whats best and most practical for you, dont rush in and end up with a lemon though!, i am just about happy with my cars now and i changed those for practical reasons, the rallye had to go because of a growing family, and i got me another mk1 4 years later :wink:

I would love to get a G60 Edition one, mmmmmmmmmmm

Why get sensible as you get older.
As you get older insurance gets cheaper.
You don't get a second look from the Police once they see that you are nearer to picking up your pension than you are to receiving chid benefit.
You can really surprise the "younger" element when they find out that you know where the accelarater is.

I have had my GTi now for 25 years (thats a clue to my age) and will not get rid of it. Ok so I can afford to run more than one car, but if you can, try and get a second car because if you ever want to try and get another
finding one to your satisfaction (within price bracket) may prove difficult.

So you want something that is bigger and more practical - well I know newer cars are bigger but I did use the Golf for many years as my main car. It has taken 4 adults all the way to Austria on 2 occaisions, for a weeks holiday and one family holiday to southern Germany. It has had to cater for a growing family, lugging around all the "baggage" that goes with
babies, then having to cater with a close on 6 foot teenager.

I haven't tried it yet but it would probably even do the university run at the begining and end of term, loaded with everything students "need" these days.

So although it is small by todays standards it really can be a practical and sensible choice. Where else would you get that sort of performance without taking out a mortgage and so long as it is reliable it wont cost an arm and a leg to run. Ecconomy wise it even returns  a good mpg. You have to be going some to dip below 30mpg overall.

Keep it if you can, I've never regreted keeping hold of mine, even more so now.

Had to take mine off the road last friday & was given a Japanese car for nothing to fart arround the gaff till the weather brightens up more however I'm finding it very very difficult to find somewhere to shelter the Golf from reindeer droppings over the winter months   

I'm waiting on a few people to call me back with hibernating information about a cool dry resting place for rabbits  :wink:

I have to agree with you 100%….Mine is garaged and i have a Mk2 runabout that takes the knocks.When the weather is good i roll the Mk1 out and it brings a smile to my face,more so as its not driven everyday and its a pleasure just to get away from it all…Man and Mk1!!!…lol  

Plus i never have got bored of it.Guess thats why ive had it 21 years ….. 8)

a weird thought I just had, say the average age on here is about 26. when im that age the mark1 will be about 40odd/50 year old!

Fair crazy, like buying a car from the 50's/60's now
