wicked first car, especially if you want to have abit of a tinker yourself like

i had a 1.1c bags of fun, loved it. sadly had to sell.

went abit bankrupt! But thats another story.

Yeah, insurance costs are ok. Depending what you get I payed 1700 a year.

But if you have a double garage am guessin you live in a nicer area than I did :)

1.1 or 1.3 is probably a good starting point. forget the hallowed letters GTI till youre at least 21!

sorting new brakes and suspension is a good idea but it WILL increase your insurance as the cars then been modified (17yr old + moded car = insurance companies dream!).

When really it should go down  :dontknow:
Better brakes & suspension = safer car, surely
AND he's not gonna want to wrap up his pride & joy

I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines :o

the insurance company dont see it like that thou. as far as theyre concerned the suspension and brakes on a 1.1 mk1 golf are substantial enough for what the cars intended. bigger brakes + better suspension suggest the car may be used at higher speeds or for motor sports making it a greater risk, plus the modifications could make the car more desirable to theives.

if you fit a roll cage in theory it makes the car safer in a crash. in reality the insurance company sees it as a racing/ motor sport mod so youre more of a risk!

Yeh I know but it's just not on.
Being able to stop at half the distance than prior to upgrade is GOOD

Bloody thieves the lot of 'em

1.5GL here Driving for ~ 6 monts

35-40MPG even with abit of fun driving.

Mines only done 60k tho and has been garaged for the last 10 years so rust etc is non existent.

But yea I'd so go for it as its all pretty simple to fix :D

I'd already replaced the vac pipes, fuel pipes, thermostat and im thinking about a weber carb upgrade.

So yea i'd doooo it :D

Its fine to buy as your first car,but be prepared to put a little effort in to keep it roadworthy and reliable

and if FTJ says not to mention Yazz,I would'nt mention  The Plastic Population either :?  :?

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!
