explains it clearly. Obviously, its not just the chassis number, but needs to be a GTI and have the two options codes (for the options, and the alloy wheels).

I know that but that link shows ETKA stating special sales campaign on more than just the gti, whats the reason behind that?

Throughout ETKA the word "campaign" is used in the generic sense as special edition models based on Golf, Jetta, Golf GTI, etc. eg 727 is for the campaign/special edition model "GX" that could be ordered on the Golf only.

if u read what i put i say my mk1 1.8 gti a reg ????????????? yet at a glance it will still look like a campaign unless u inspect my number lol so im easy but either way im glad my mars red is ew17 aaa
The year of registration isn't important - there's a B reg Mk1 GTI hatchback, probably more! Its the chassis number which is important in identifying if its a campaign or not.
I'd not worry too much over whether its a Campaign or not - VASTLY more important is the condition. Given that one will be 28 years old and the other will be 29 years old (approx), then condition is far more important than age, for example. Another factor is this: it could be said that there's lots of 'campaigns' around, because people sought them out, restored them, cherished them, stored them, used them as 2nd cars, etc etc while non-campaign Golf GTIs were used more normally. So, given the same condition, it could be argued that a non-campaign GTI would be rarer, and some would perceive this as more desirable. Its only the 'campaign' hysteria that keeps the demand, and thus the values, slightly higher than the non-campaigns. If you actually look at the options the campaigns came with that the non-ones didn't, you'll see that there's nothing particularly valuable in itself eg its not like the special edition came with air conditioning, or a bigger engine, or leather trim etc etc
Just enjoy the car for what it is, not for what people on an internet forum think it is (or not).

The chassis number model year, "D" or "E" is largely irrelevant in determining a Campaign or not, it is the option codes that matter. There are "E" chassis cars that are not Campaigns.
I know, but there's a bit of a head-scratcher issue if the options code sticker is missing. Chassis number can offer evidence to say "no" or "maybe" but can't say "yes" this is a campaign. Correct chassis number range + presence of all the options listed on the guide pages is normally seen as okay.
