the dream..........

Hey folks, Ive recently bought a MK1 GTi, and Im after a little advice and feedback from some of those in the know. I plan to use it just for fun, but I will be doing some amount of modifying to it, some I'm gonna have a bash at, some clearly needs leaving to the pro's.

Heres my vision, lemmie know what you think………

Exterior
It is black at the moment, and I am thinking of keeping that colour, half of me wants to go with a pale sky blue metalic modern colour with it.
Id like to smooth out the sills down the side and remove the door handles, going for a solenoid entry.
No  body kit just a chin spoiler and slight flaring of the arches
Debadged grill with bonnett brow spoiler
Crystal headlights
DTM mirrors
De badged rear
Audi alloys (dunno which ones yet, polished though)

Interior
this is where im a bit unsure.
I want to try and fit an Audi TT dash and dials if thats poss, anyone ever tried, or heard of that?
leather all around
electric widows
small boot install

Engine
total novice on engines, without sounding like a girl, Id like a shiney one……….  that sounds so gay…….

anyone know who does shiney engines?

Well thats my plan, I have a few ?k saved up an put aside for it, but will take on as much as I can, with the help of the odd manual, Im not scared to learn, or give somethin ago, before admitting defeat and taking it to someone who knows!

Cheers

Dont make your engine shiny

Dont remove your door handles, will look naff and you'll have issues with solenoids

But then its your car huh….good luck with it.

Don't like the sound of any of the mods really. Visually the standard car holds it's own.

I love the car and I love its heritage, I just want to bring it forward 30 years. Its a personal thing but I rckon the outside sils look dated, as does the interior, particularly the dash

Don't see how you can love it but not like the look of it  :?

You might want to make it look more modern, but in 2 years it will look more dated and out of fashion than the original car.

Ste, it's a Mk1  :D
You have a few ?k saved, don't waste it. Slight mods by all means (wheels, grill, lights, leather interior, engine) but please don't butcher it

Go in the concourse direction (Look at values on here).

Less is more, and the money put in will be invested rather than blown.

If still in any doubt have a look @ these :

The other option is to not remove them.

Leaving 'em on  :dontknow:

'I think it looks *CENSORED*'!!!!!!
If that's a 4 letter word I'm not 100% sure you've bought the right car.
With all due respect what you want to do would look ok with on a  Mk2 NOT a Mk1 tho' IMO
 :)
I don't want appear like I'm having a go, it's your car. But the beauty is the fact it's a 30 year old car and still better looking than most of the modern 'jelly moulds' on the road today  :D

why buy a car with years of character then remove it by trying to update it.

on the otherhand you can get golf leather seats (heated too).

and some nice alloys (scala, p slots, gti)

and why remove the handles? can you leave them and fit your solenoids.

what is wrong with the sills????and the retro dash. putting a modern dash in an old car looks naff.

the lines just don't work.search on the tinterweb for a dash conversion that looks good in a golf………bet ya can't find one.

i once saw a mk3 polo dash convertion. it looked rubbish

leave the handles on or maybe audi handles  :dontknow:

try and keep the lines but a bit of smoothing couldnt go a miss.

Nothing like a tonne of bricks for the new members eh?

I'm not a fan of too many mods, and don't particularly get the smoothing of areas like the sills/inner arches/engine bays, or swage line.

If I were you Stevie I'd have a look in some late 90's PVW mags as some of the ideas you have sound like what was about then. Thats not a mickey take either, the debadged grille, dtm mirrors and eyebrow spoiler sound of that era.

If your budgeting and your dead set on modifying I would look out for mk1 doors with audi 80 handles that have already been converted. Also debadged/delocked tailgates are available cheap on ebay (I just sold one for 1p  )

I think the current trend is to revert back to original spec and then implement that with extras such as a modern dash/plush interior/expensive alloys. The mods you have described are, when combined, a bit old hat. That's why you'll find the modified tailgates/doors cheap on the bay.

Some of the mods you've mentioned sound good, such as the flared arches, but less is more so ease back on some of the other stuff.

Good luck with it. :)

Thanks for the replie, this is the kinda thing I was after, I said they were ideas, and they werent set in stone.
What has jus been mentioned sounds right.  the reverting back to original spec with extras like alloys and interior.
I like the look I have seen and I have not seen many looks, I saw a few things on the "post a pic of your fave mk1" thread that I liked the look of, I jus do not have a wide knowledge base to pull my ideas from. DTM mirrors and grill brow, well I know thats a lil old but it still looks good, and as I already said options, there arent many suitable alternatives

Plus interior, Im defo gonna attempt the TT dash and full leather.

Smoothing wise, I think the car look better when that line is smoothed, sorry if you dont all like that, thats another thing I will be doing.

Which line are you wanting to smooth off? The one midway up the doors?

I realise this is all down to personal taste

Personally I think removing or changing door handles, smoothing off tailgate, single wipers, bee stings all look totally bobbins

Dashboards from other cars also never look right, but it's up to you

Have a look at the dash xpea did as I think this is the best compromise

You do realise that 'swage lines' are put into the sides of cars to stiffen the panel? If you smooth it by filling, with that large and deep an area, it will only be a matter of time before it swells and or cracks. If you were to do a welded smoothing, you'd either make the panel floppy, or need to reinforce it somehow behind, which could be a right pain.
