There is a big difference

Tatty = not having the money and/or skills to restore a Mk1 or quite happy using car in current form as a daily workhorse. Might have the intention to restore when time/money allows.

Ratty = deliberately making a Mk1 look crap by denting it, rusting it, writing on it, covering it with rubbish, etc. No intention to restore the car, more likely to get broken for parts or crushed by new owner.

tell that to the air cooled scene Rajan

you saw mine at VW Action, it got more looks and attention than any other parked on our stand!!!!

Same at westside show, was parked next to Danny Smith and we had equal amounts of interest…

Just because your an anal purist, doesnt meen everyone else has to be!!!
I am semi restoring my car THE WAY I LIKE IT it this kind of attitude that gets clubs and people a bad name…

My car has NOT been deliberately dented, but in fact I saved the tailgate from going to the scrappy because it already had the little dent in it..

People are different and like different things, I like the ratty look and keeping the car on the road.. I've had a few offers from people to buy it as it is..

And in answer to your statement, yes Ratty and Tatty are slightly different, but saying that its deliberately making them look crap is a huge statement..

Each is to their own opinion, I personally i feel by whacking in a huge engine, flared arches, smoothed engine bays, bentley rims and throwing 20k plus at one as a show car also spoils the mk1, but is that then still making it look crap.. No its up to the owner, rust n prime, or show n shine!!  Or be boring and keep as VW intended.. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and style

My opinion applies equally to air-cooled, water-cooled, Ford, whatever.

When was I commenting on your car in particular? Why get so defensive?

Oxford dictionary "restore - return to a former condition, place, or owner"

Maybe you should know that 12 years ago I put a 2 litre Pack D 8V head in my Helios Campaign, 4 branch, Group A Supersprint, Bilsteins, big brakes and ran high 15s up the TRL 1/4 mile. Pretty quick back then. 4 years ago I ran one of the most modified show Mk1s around.

So before you get all defensive and start accusing individuals have a think!

who's getting defensive now!

I just said that I'll look at every mk1, I wont go and say that someone is deliberately making a Mk1 look crap as its their own opinion and if they like it and enjoy it, whats wrong with that..

You do now prefer the original style mk1's everyone knows that and we all know you like to keep them standard (ish), yes dubhit was nice, I remember being shown pics of it form wurthersea before you got it and Jaymac also showed it a lot before selling it on.. But you didnt keep hold of it in your stockpile tho!! Why, because it was modified and not standard???

Quoting the oxford dictionary on restore makes a mockery of what everyone does then, a lot of people say resto, but mean they are making the car better than it was when they got their hands on it..
