sunroof or non sunroof

I have a glass roof in my golf ,I plan to remove it and fit a nnew roof i'm not sure what to go for though .A good second hand roof from a scrapped golf, original windey one of course or  no sunroof at all.so which is more sought after and would be of greater value in years to come?

Personally I'd say non sunroof as its just less to get rusty and don't have to worry about it as much

Definately non sunroof.I very much doubt you can find a solid sunroofed roof even if you think it's a good one it is a lot of work to change it and there is no guarantee  that in 6 months time the rust isn't bubbling up somewhere on your new roof. Unfortunately they are a weak point and the only way you can ensure a long life is to go non sunroof. I have a Campaign, obviously one of the last models and am changing the roof as we speak to non sunroof, I had holes around the back edge of the sunroof and also 3 small holes in a line halfway down the roof from where the water has been sitting in the inner tray. It could be patched but I want the car to last another 20+plus years and as I'm carrying many bodywork repairs including respraying inside and out I dont want to be revisiting the roof for many years. I know I am going against the originality but originality means original problem and original rust so this is the compromise.
Hope this helps.

thanks folks, i was kinda leaning towards an original  sunroof ,but like you say andy I also dont want any hassle in  a few years time with rust issues .by the way andy how are you doing the roof ?are you just fitting a piece from an old roof in the void or are you changing the whole roof ? any before and after pics?i wonder is there any how tos on here or any project threads relating to sunroofs .i'll have a look. thanks again

Another option is to go with a carbon fibre roof swop…  :D

1980 Series 1 GTI (gone now .. what a mistake selling her!)
1979 Series 1 LD - the Mandarin Dragon … gone as well. oh dear.

yes ,i was considering that ,i was looking at performance trim website  a while back and drooling . i believe there gone bust now.the roofs look really sweet .then i was thinking it was too modern looking.I was also thinking of painting the car orange to match the C/F roof .But i dont think i'd get away without the missus noticing it .I only got it painted black  afew years ago.

I brought a second hand roof from someone on here. It had been chopped off at the top of each pillar. I removed the skin from the frame by drilling out the spotwelds each end and grinding off the edge seams. I then repeated the process on my car and plugwelded the original spots and continuously welded the edge seams. This is probally the hardest and most time consuming part because you need to do short runs at a time to avoid heat build up and distortion.I'll post some photos and more detail asap. The photos of the car with the roof skin cut off are scary!!

i have the same problem with my campaign as well……. like pretty much all of us with sunroofs…

had mine tidyed up a few years ago and its back, so will need to address it this winter..

always wanted to keep it totally standard but always thought a carbon roof would look the dogs,

would you know if you could keep the sunroof if you go carbon,

is the roof a cover or a replacement?

sure i've seen a part carbon mk1 on here?

what you do is cut most of the roof away but leave enough all the way round to stick the carbon fiber roof on to

Mk2 sunroof is exactly the same and readily available. It isn't that hard to swap over. There's a guide on here somewhere I think……

Campaign Mk 1 Black

16v Mk2 Red (decsd )
