Spraying wings

Hi,
The wings on my golf have bad cracking/ rubbed off bits, and a little rusting. I was planning on buyingthis paint, and usingthis compressor and this type of spray gun. I also was going to get a water trap like this.

My brother said not to bother, as when he sprayed his mates car (after scatting it!) he did a poor job with dust and rubbish in the paint.

However, if I find a clean/ dry area to do the painting, should I be able to do a good job that closely matches the rest of the car? Just don't want to go and spend £40 and find I have made the car look worse!!!
Cheers
Rob

You also need to take into account you will need primer, thinners, hardener, lacquer and a host of other materials. Plus the fact you've never sprayed before and don't say if you have an air-fed mask etc.  Don't forget, in the above you have isocyanates which is nasty stuff.
I would get a 'professional shop' to paint it, but you can always prep it to your standards

Ok thanks. If it wanted professionally doing,  I would probably leave it until I have the money for a full respray.
However, it is a skill I would love to learn!
Would it be worth getting a rattle can and going over it?
Just it looks a bit naff.  It has rubbed through to the primer in places and through to the previous (green)  paint in places.
I might get a quote if I prep and prime them,
Cheers

If you are sparaying yourself don't try and match doing the wings yourself leave that to a pro.

If you do the whole car yourself give it a go because the colour will be the same, matching colours is left to a pro.

Ok, thanks for the opinions, I may just touch up the really bad bits to stop them rusting and leave it.

Painting at home is more than possible, heres an MGB i've recently done..

Not exactly sure what the paint is that you've linked to is?  As its a 50/50 mix of paint and thinners then its either gonna be synthetic or cellouse, neither of which need an air mask, although the laquer coat may be 2k.  Not sure as I've never used that type of paint before

The compressor is pretty small and a 50ltr tank may be better, also the ultra cheapy gun may be a bit crap!!

Sealey do a range of ok cheap guns.

Cellouse is a better choice for home use but may react with the old paint so painting it with 'bar-coat' first is a good idea.  This doesn't need an airfed mask so you don't need a 2nd compressor(or one huge one)

What colour are you painting?

If you only plan on doing this once then it work out cheaper to hire what you need that buy it.

Also if its just a small area then colour matched rattle cans are probably gonna be easier and cheaper.

People have painted entire cars with rattle cans before(although you need about 30 of them!!)
