Sportline's Worth More?

Are Sportline Cabbys really worth nearly twice as much as other Mk1's of the same year etc.??  They always seem priced around £4000???   I personally just don't get it…..  Discuss… :wink:

They'd be worth more due to condition and extra kit/equipment, but there would no premium over that. Condition is by far the most important, don't underestimate the difference between an "excellent" condition car and one that's superficially good but has a few faults and niggles, etc.

Personally, I don't think you can make any conclusions on prices unless you know the actual sale went through, and at what price. Plenty of cars are advertised (even on this website!!!!!) at headline prices far exceeding their value, and I doubt they ever sell.

The club should do a cabby price guide but based on market info of actual sales, not guesswork or finger-in-the-air stuff.

4k will get you a very nice sportline but not a mint one.

sportlines are expensive for a few reasons

not as many were made as the clipper
more demand for them like the rivarge
and they are high spec electrics, wheels etc

this make the price higher

I appreciate that there are fewer of the 'special editions originally created.  There seem to be many cabbys…eg. Clippers, that find owners at around £1500 - £2000.  My own car is factory standard with almost flawless paint  and skinny steels, and prize winning in a VW concours but I would think value of £2000-2200  and of course I'd like more for it….  Cabby guide please…for anyone on the committee…..  Cheers

There's a price guide for hatchbacks though. It wouldn't be that hard to do one for cabbys. There is an obvious demand for one!

very true paul there is a hatchback guide. but there was a thread a few month ago say this was out of date, you could never have a indate price guide as things are always moving around and there are to many variables

sportlines are expensive for a number of reasons…

there aren't as many of them - only 449 registered in the UK - makes them a little more desirable…

only available in flash red or black

they have the few extra bits 15" BBS black/silver alloy wheels, "Sportline" decals, inside unique orange/red needles in the dial, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, gearshift knob, & handle for brake lever, and the Recaro sports seats with Jacquard sports trim.

their prices go up and down - summer months they always increase but october sees them go down.

I have seen them go as high as £8.5K for mint ones - an good one will fetch £4K.

Did vw decide to make only 449 sportlines for the uk Market or was that merely the number that they managed to sell?.. In the last couple of years, the only gti convertibles available were sportlines and ravages.. I am guessing that the numbers of various colours and models sold were due to their desirability and so a black sportline, rare as that may be, is rare because people chose red ones in preference.. At the time, they sold more ravage than sportline.. Half as many again roughly.. So at what point does rarity overtake desirability?.. Does it even? We are almost 20 years on from the last ones made.. Condition and originality surely must be factors in commanding top price and as already mentioned, people think that because another went for £4,000 then that is what they are now worth.. The only way of deciding as a buyer what they are worth is go and see as many as is practical before you buy.. You will see the differences between good and bad for yourself.. Bid on the best one and leave those people asking over the odds to sit and wait for a buyer.. Read the buyers guides on here and check for all the common issues, that way if you pay over the odds to make sure you get the car that you want, you shouldn't then have even more expense that you didn't account for.. Am I going off in the wrong direction here ?..

And I had my black sportline stolen on Friday. I paid £2500 for it 6 years ago. Spent a load on it, but not sure what insurance will offer me!

The insurance company's job is to try not to pay out, or pay out as little as possible.. If I were you, I would print off every classified ad for a sportline that you can find.. Then, using any recent photographs of your own to prove it's condition, provide the insurance company with a portfolio of evidence as to current values and what would be a fair value for yours.. One member on here had a total loss claim on a rivage a few years ago, I had been watching prices on eBay and as such, still had all the item numbers from those which had sold in the few months prior to her claim. We provided this info to her insurance company and had her value increased from £1500 to £3000 as I remember.. So I would suggest that you start building your case as soon as possible in the same way..

Cheers for the advice wait. I have every MOT ticket for it and nearly a tonne of paper work so I can prove it was looked after.

Its not really about the money as the only way I would have parted with it was if someone had stolen it. I would just see an insurance pay out as compensation, although £3 grand would be nice.
