Some indy in Ireland trustable to let him work on my mk1??

Hi there lads,

I'm working currently in Dublin and brought my ride with me, it's a mk1 GTI, now I got a powered steering and want get it mounted, but I'm not sure if I can trust any mechanic here…
Anyone knows a good one who has worked before with them?

Thanks really appreciate any help!

Why can't you trust a mechanic in Dublin?

Because not all of them can handle old cars and almost none of them will be able to mount a mk1 power steering into a mk1, I bet you that you cannot find 5 that are able to do this.

Think maybe thats a bit strong..have you asked any of the local garages if they know of any one. You could try the northern beetle owners club in the north they may be able to put you in touch with some one around the border and im sure they would have links with the south as well, remember its only 1 1/2 hours or less up to belfast from Dublin with the new M1. There are some good garages around the belfast/Hillsborough area. But if thats to far and you dont trust the mechanics in Dublin maybe wait till you go back to the UK.

OK OK think indeed was too strong the comment reading it up again.

I never meant to say that I don't trust Dublin mechanics, just because they are from Dublin or wherever, I mean that I wouldn't trust any mechanic all over the world that has no experience with mk1s or old cars, maybe it's just me but for normal revisions and all this kind of stuff I don't mind but with something so delicate as mounting a powered steering…. I am not that trustful.
Sorry if someone felt offended.

Thanks for the advices!

No worries or offence taken, if you cant get it done in or around Dublin think about the North of Ireland. I know a good mechanic in Hillsborough near Lisburn, again just a couple of hours drive from you. As i said earlier also check out www.nboc.co.uk its the beetle site in the north but there are also watercooled people on the site as well with local links.

Plenty of good mechanics in Dublin

Just need to get a phone directory  :dontknow: and make a few calls… plenty of VAG specialists.

Check out www.vagdrivers.net stick up a post…

alloy-wheels.ie, JM Motors in maynooth (he has a mk1 cab - bought some bits from me), george dalton in portlaoise and mark murphy motors spring to mind.

Good luck with your search

Cheers Hugh.
