Servicing

Didnt really know where to post this as its not really technical and I havent found a servicing guide using the search. Maybe I'll make one…

My Golf was sat for a while before I bought it and the only drive it's had is a 5 mile drive from Marlow to Wycombe.

I'm looking to fully service it when I get back from my holiday (in Portgual and dreaming of the golf lol) but just wondering what I need to get.

So far Im thinking of flushing the cooling system (never done this before with product eg radflush) and new thermostat, then:

Oil
Oil Filter
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Spark Plugs
Dizzy
Rotor Arm
HT Leads

The main things Im thinking are fuel filter because its been sat for a while and flushing the cooling system coz it looks like shit in the header tank. Back in my Classic Mini days we were reluctant to flush the cooling system as it could cause problems with seals but im guessing it should be ok on golfs?

Anything else anyone can suggest? Anything Ive missed?

Dunc

ps. Just became a paid member for the discounts and this would be my view from where Im sitting right now (if it wasnt 11.30 at night):

And my ride while im away (worse than my Saxo which says alot):

Inaddition to what you have already listed, drain gearbox and replace with semi-synth 75w/90. Remove all four wheels and disassemble/reassemble brakes replacing anythings that leaking or seized or worn out. Bleed brakes.

Powerwash underneath, touch up any loose underseal, (pay particular attention to the fuel filler pipe) re-underseal waxoyl eveywhere. Polish paintwork. Make it last another 30 years.

haha the underside is on the list of things to do and funkstar ill be overhauling the brakes before it goes for an MOT as well. Cheers for the heads up on the gearbox oil.

I'm mainly concerned with getting it running properly so I can drive it in and out the garage to work on other bits.

Think this is gonna be an ongoing project reaaly. Theres a long way to go….

Yeah I'll check the condition of it first. Are they hard to do yourself? Not sure what mileage the engine has done so gonna see how it runs and consider dropping something else in it.

Change yer points. If you want to flush your cooling system, drain whats in there then do a mix of Cheap washing powder and water, refill the system and run it up. Then drain it again you will be amazed how much crud comes out. Give it an engine flush, Forte is great. Give it a brake fluid change and change your aux belt if needed

8v cam belt is really easy, dont need any locking tools just get all the marks lined up in the right place. Once its done rotate the engine with 19mm socket on the bottom pulley a couple of full rotations just to make shaw alls ok
