Series 1 question.....

Hi all,
Im looking at maybe purchasing a series 1 golf, is it true that they only had a drivers side wing mirror?

my series 1 has only got a drivers side mirror, i think a passengers side one would have been a optional extra? not too sure though

Can you please have a look at this one for sale and give me your opinion

thats a really nice gti, but its not a series 1 its got the large rear lights and the later dash, im sure this might of had the later wing mirrors on either side? as standard, maybe somebody's just put a couple of early parts on it in the past

im pretty sure the early gti's were all 1.6's up to late '81 i might be wrong though. yeah they did mate

There were series 2 1.6 GTIs. There's a timeline/history of the changes through the years on the home page.

Extra mirrors were an option on S1's, but it's a S2.

As already said, passenger mirror was an option on s1 & that graham walker car isn't a s1.  You're right about the seats, s1 GTIs have check/tartan not stripes.

Nice looking car, especially the interior.  Couple of other minor thing wrong;   

VW badge on grill should be black.  
Back GTIs usually have a silver/grey stripe along the side under the black side strips (car has had paint?).
I also thought all GTis had a full set of dials in the centre console.
White dials?  Not seen these on a standard GTI before, so prob after market change?
Nit picking maybe but 8k and doesn't seem to have matching tyres.

Still a nice car.

Does look very nice but a couple pointers which I have noticed…

As mentioned should have a passenger wing mirror
Seats look like they have been re upholstered as the black section on the rear should be slightly raised and not completely flat.
Sure early 1.6 should have a top fill rad.Run outs and 1.8's had expansion bottle.
Defo had paint as pointed out and white dials are after market fitted.

Front and rear seats were changed in 1982. From 82 front seats incorporate more knee room for rear passengers and rear seat has different foam and trim (eg width of pattern section and moulding shape)

Top fill rad on GTi is S1 only. S2 1.6 has the expansion tank.

S2 1.6 has oil temp gauge only in console. 1.8 had nothing
