selling up?

after a chat with my mate at the weekend, he convinced me to sell the campaign. i use it every day for any journey. as a carpenter this means i can be putting some mileage on her and sometimes too many tools are in the boot (sometimes back seats too). the suggestion is to sell her, get a cheapy for the garage and tinker at will and buy an old banger to ruin to work. it does make sense and i know he is right, but i'm sure she is looking at me with puppy dog headlamps.
need a bit of support that i'm going to do the right thing. ?

if you are planning on getting another car i'd say keep the campaign and get a cheap runner. if you buy another mk1 with the intention to tinker at will.
A).  you are going to be spending money on a car to achieve a standard that  you already have in your campaign,
B).  YOU WILL REGRET SELLING BIG TIME.
C). WILL MIGHT NOT WANT TINKERING WITH.
just buy a runner and enjoy what you have, better the devil you know. think your friend might have his own interest at heart…..

Mk1 2l TSR G60.  .getting. There twice as fast

Mk1 lhd diesel…….getting. There for half the cost

I wouldnt sell what i knew was a good car unless i was "upgrading" or more like changing to a newer version of V dub

If you get a cheap one you may be chucking good money after bad, as said just get another cheap shedder for work use and keep the mk1 garaged for best use

one of the sticking points is that i want to mess around abit with one. i know the 'campaign' thing is a bit of an issue with some people, but lets face it, there are not many atlas grey tin tops about. i think best to let some one else look after her for what she is and i can have a toy. i've quite a few bits and bobs ;ying around and have good connections for other bits.

hmmm.

yeah but if you sell it who knows what someone else will do to it????????

still atleast there wont be blood on your hands   so to speak

if you want to mod it?  mod it, its your car after all!!

I want an early series 1 gti again so i can either part restore or modify as sometimes modding is cheaper!!!

"Its rare so I shouldn't modify it" doesn't really do it as an argument for me. Those people who want to see cars kept standard should find, buy and own their own car to keep standard, not impose their will on others.

So…as far as I'm concerned, go ahead and 'modify'. A lot of mods (eg engine conversion) don't result in outward changes in looks anyway.

I can't speak for your personal circumstances but if you've found and worked on a car for any length of time, you'll regret selling it. You won't make the money back you've invested, and you'll probably end up fixing the same things over again on a 'newer' 'less good' car, which won't be cost effective. If anything, but a second car to play around with, there's no harm in having >1 car.

i agree about the modding bit. i would not think of putting restrictions on a buyer (that couldn't be enforced anyway). cost wise is as is. i don't drive mk1's to make profit, which is a good thing. i just figure that a motor laying around in bits and needing a bit of work to get her up and running, doesn't seem so much of a problem to stick a cage in and swap the glass for plastic. etc…. seems sacrilidge to do what i want on my mk1. double standards? maybe. illogical? maybe too.

selling

as a fellow chippy who also uses my cabby to cart my tools to work ( i remove the back seat to save it from wear and tear ) it does make sense to sell and buy something more practical, what about getting a caddy ? that way you still get the mk1 experience, could upgrade the engine etc
i know its something i have considered, but if i was you i would still keep the campaign and get a caddy, as like others have said you may regret selling when its gone

keep it mate, Mod it in your own way, at least you know the car and wont end up getting a load of problems and starting again…

For work, I'm a bathroom fitter/plumber so have tools etc in cars and was making a hash of them, so i bought a caddy van of fleabay, its a 99 model with she dloads of miles on it already.. over 160k when i got it, it starts fine every morning and as a bonus its the non turbo model so runs on biodiesel.. Cheap as chips for work, plus its still a VAG.. Best bet, I've insured it, fully comp, full business use, had no no claims bonus for a tad under ?300. Van cost aroudn ?700 at time..

end of the day mate, I'd say keep yours and do as YOU wish to it..
whats best modding it and keeping on the road, or letting someone else have it and then they either mod it or end up scrapping it..

But its your decision..

You're joking? The 3 series estate is one of the worst and smallest estates around. If you're looking for a good size of boot, go for a W124 Merc instead. Cheap too, I picked a 300TE up for ?450.

I didnt say say i liked it! its just a practical cheap motor for work stuff or people with kids and dogs etc, besides that hes a photocopier engineer and you can fit a full size copier in the back of the BMW!! so im sure a few woodwork tools and a table saw shouldnt faze it?

Yes. In my 18 years of driving, I have never, ever, let a BMW out yet. Apparently the drivers develop an aggressivel style to compensate for this lack of courtesy which most other motorists seem to show to them. Don't get it so much in a Merc or Jaguar.

Mate cant believe you wanna sell it, was the exhaust that broke the camels back?

Mate store (sorn) the Campaign in the garage and get another car.

I know I've had the same dilema but you know what I'm glad I did'nt sell the GTI, I actually feel like I've got a bit of kudo's still without even driving it???

But I do understand good luck with any dicesion though
