Right, need your collective brains!

Apologies if this is in the wrong section

Better explain myself, prior to us buying the car it was in storage for ten years (on 78k) and bar change the oil and stick petrol in it I haven't touched the engine. Before you all condemn me to hell I have set aside a few days to go down to my mums place and make use of the anderson shelters to take it off the road and give it a good service, with the valuable experience (and patience!) of my old man.

At work I started searching for the various parts I want to replace, before I knew it 2 hrs had gone by and I'm no nearer to finding the best parts/prices.

I'm looking for advice on 1)where to source what I need and also 2)any suggestions on what people would do  maintenance-wise if they were in my shoes.

list starts:

rocker gasket set
fan belt
sparkplugs
oil filter
air filter
hoses (Sparco ones worth it?any alternatives?)
braided brake hoses (Goodridge?)
pads/disks (will upgrade at some point so just same fitment for now)
HT Leads/rotor arm

Cam belt being done by a mate, just want to do the basics myself to learn about the car and use my remaining cash getting it set up right.

Read the stickys on basic maintenance and I'm sure they'll come in handy when we're stuck under the bonnet (will try and do the tappets as well!), planning to swap the hood over as well so will search out that fitting DVD!

GSF - and they are doing free carriage on all web orders in 2008.

Type GSF into google and it's the 1st thing that comes up. They'll do all you need and the people on the phone are really helpful and good (just remeber to order online :wink: )

think you mean samco hoses  :mrgreen:

i used Venair as they were doing a deal they seem pretty good and are a good bit cheaper

Hi,

    as above GSF for most parts, ones I would go to alternative supplier for are top mounts as they dont supply febi units. I have used AVS for front suspension parts ie top mounts, dampers etc. AVS Car Parts - [The VW - Audi - Seat - Skoda Parts Specialist]

To your list I would flush and change the coolent mixture as earlier as you can.

change brake fluid.

and check the top mounts, bump stops and dampers as you may wish to change these.

Also try Euro Car Parts….. or even your main stealer for some parts and compare prices, Also always ask for a discount, It does do any harm  :D

GSF without doubt. I'm lucky tho' there's one within 10 mins of me & staff ace  :)

I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines :o

what engine is it and most motor facters local to you should be fine

This is fun part of owning a mk1, hope your ready for this :lol:
Basically you want to give it a ood service, oil, filter etc etc, cut a long story short and trust me it's what alot of mk1 owners do in the end, IS change the bloody lot  :lol:
Wishbones, suspension, front brakes, rear brakes, handbrake cables, clutch cable, change fluid, gearbox oil, top strut mounts, dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads, spark plugs…………..list is endless, do this now save all hassle of waiting for mot failure to arise and you'll have a near mint and better handling and more enjoyable golf, lets not forget respray, retrim interior……Can you see where this is going  :lol:
Don't get top strut mounts from gsf, they are bobbings, febi or dealers, get you usual brakes pads, leads, carb flange etc etc from gsf, but depending on what part you ask for here, there are plenty of members with excellent experience to both reassure you and get you the info you need.
You have the mk1 fever, dont get married yet, you wont be able too due to finances as you'll see spend spend spend will be your weekly routine for the mk1  :lol:

there's a way around that


stop driving it  :wink:  :lol:

always think it makes sense to replace any rubber mounts really.. 20+ year old rubber isn't really up to much

and seriously, there is a point in Mk1 ownership when you don't need to buy parts for it… just haven't met anyone who's there yet  :lol:

As well as most of the bushes being perished with age the coolant pipes will have suffered. My mk1 was parked up for a year when I got it and had 3 coolant pipes let go within the first few weeks, one started leaking on the way home.

You won't be able to get all of them new, some of them might be available in silicon, some at the dealers and some you'll have to get good second hand.

Once you get it nice and hot and under pressure old rubber tends to split unfortunately.

Then again you may not have any problems. :lol:
