hhmm. can't see how i'd get the engine out from underneath the car. ? master cylinder is off but the servo is still on. being replaced with mk2 16v items.

drop the engine and box with a jack onto the floor and jack the car up as high as you can then drag engine out simples

are you asuming the front of the car is off?

Or simply release the handbrake and drive the 'crane' out the way, or extend its boom. Especially easy if you have one of these:

Or use boxes or long axle stands to jack the car high enough, in the middle. Or use a 4 post or 2 post ramp.

i have 1 axle stand and a trolley jack that'll go about 500mm max and an engine crane that'll lift higher than the garage roof! i can't see how i could get that car up high enough for an engine to 'slide' underneath it? am i missing something?

well how you going to lift it out if the cran hits the roof? doh

You could drop the engine onto a piece of board/wood and use the engine crane to lift the car, if you can get its legs out the way that is. Or use it to lift the car then support it and wheel it out the way. Sounds like a lot of messing about TBH.

The usual way I do it is jack the car so the tyres are about 4" clear of the floor; remove the gearbox from underneath (its light enough to drag out easily) then remove the engine from the top. My engine crane is so wide its front legs can't fit between the front wheels of the car, but yours might fit.

If the servo's not in the car (if you're doing 16V MC and servo upgrade anyway, it would need to be removed/replaced) then the engine and box fit, both coming up through the top.

You'd need to shorten the chain or strap. If this is short enough, its possible to remove the engine without removing the bonnet - so it should be do-able in a double garage.

i've got plenty clearance hight wise, it's just the crane cane lift up to about 3m high! it fits between the wheels just.

ok. not too confident on the under and out method. not sure how to release the clevis pin on the servo, so i dropped the box out tonight. i must be going about most things completely cack handed. the air was blue, the sweat plenty but at least i didn't bang my bonce. downpipe nut was a complete tosser so i'm now 2 cuts of the downpipe and one bolt in the engine side mount away from the good old dx coming out.
