Registered cars on this forum. Found mine. got a question...

Ok, so I thought I'd browse the registered car section. Found my registration. The mileage adds up, the colour is right, it is a cabriolet which is stated but it says its a clipper. Mines a small bumper model, whats that about? Also, it says its a concour. Concour I thought meant like really well presented? Well mine is quite scruffy. I bought it as a project.
I'm a bit worried now because of these couple of bits. I'm hoping I havent bought a ringer.
Can anyone shed some light on the situation.

Cheers

Probably the previous owner simply selected "concours" but the car was similar condition to as it is now. Or that he perceived it as better than it was? Its unlikely to be a ringer, I'd be suspicious only if the register showed up your reg as a C when the car was a GTI, or different colour, etc.

Really? I thought clipper meant the big bumper kit. What does clipper actually mean then? Mine says karmann on the badge. What does that mean?

cheers

karmann chopped the roofs off proper golfs for a living.

sorry that doesn't sound right VW made the shell then shipped it to the Karman factory who then made the convertible.

as for clipper i think it had something to do with wind same as the golf name being german for gulf as in steam.

Clipper is simply a model, it replaced GL. I don't know why they went from GL to Clipper, but there you go. At approx the same time (less than a year), all convertibles started being produced with the big bumper and arches which is known colloquially as the "Clipper" bodykit. So its just because the 2 things happened at approx the same time, where the bodykit's name came from. Late GTI convertibles had the same bodykit too, so I don't know why its not called "late convertible" bodykit.
