rear wheels

hey all

got a slight problem with the wheels on the car. im running alleycats with 175/50/13.
my problem is the rear wheels poke out a little but a little while ago i noticed that one side started to stick out more than the other?
havnt got the wheels on the car atm but this is what they were like just before i noticed they changed

other side now sits abit further in and the passenger side sticks out more.

any ideas what i need to do to sort this?
sorry if its something easy but im a total noob to this  :D

thanks

What offset and dimensions are the wheels?

I think you will get away with that……..the law refers to the tread not the wall so you could strech some rubber on em rather than 175's maybe 165 would do it.
If it where mine I woud do nothing but up to you

well not so bothered about the poke but its just they stick out uneven. so the side in the pic now sticks out more than the other side. so looks abit odd.

there 7j and an offset of -7

wasnt sure if it was the bushes that needed replacing or something similar?

thanks

Are you sure?

175 section tyres happily fit on 5.5" wide wheels, if you used these with a negative offset of ET38 you'd have none of the above issues. By sheer chance, this was a standard size VW wheel too, so should be easy to find. Basically your wheels are the wrong size for the car AND the tyres.

dont think thats what the guys problem is. :S am i the only one that actually understands this guys problem that he's asking about.

he wants to know why one side has more poke than the other side

unfortunately i dont know why

n paul yeah as long as the tread is under the arches its fine

Can you meausre how much it sticks out?

Could be as simply as the wheel arch being fitted differently

Does it drive OK? Have you had any alignment done to verify they are lopsided?

Sticking out more on one side than the other, is normally due to slight variations in the bodywork from side to side. It could be due to something bizarre like the axle loose, or bent, etc but there's no way I could be sure unless I physically looked at the car, and I'll credit the OP for checking the obvious or not ignoring accident damage, etc.

well when i first fitted the wheels there didnt seem to be any difference but as time went on i started to notice the the rear passenger side started to poke more than the other. at most id say it was just under an inch on the passenger side while the drivers side seemed to be pulled inwards and hardly any poke.car also drove fine but havnt had any allignment done but you could quite clearly see that it was lopsided.

spoke to a guy down the local vw and he said it may be something to do with the axel like the post above but not 100% sure how to check this?
he also said it may be rear beam / axel bushes that have worn out and is causing it to move oneside more than the other?

any help is appreciated atm as i wanted to see if i can get it sorted before the wheels go back on

thanks

I don't think there's an easy check, its a case of getting under the car and physically looking at each part - the place the axle bolts to the body, the bushes, the drums, the stub axles and the way the wheel bolts onto the drum.

For example - someone on here had a similar issue and it turned out he'd not bolted the wheel on properly.

As above, if you look at the recent guide I posted up on a rear end rebuild you will see where the two main bushes are that mount the subframe in place, if it has moved an inch then any issue here will be obvious
