rear disk set-up guide

can't find a definitive guide on how to do the rear disk conversion.

i'm doing mine at the moment (86 gti cabby), going to take a few pics, but i got a few questions before i write it up and finish off my conversion.

firtsly i ordered 16v scirocco cables, but got drum brake cables, i take i thats wrong parts., and you need 16v rocco rear disk ones?

when fitting the brake pipe, i was going to run the following from  front to rear: solid new copper pipe to flexi - keep standars flexi in place (as its new) - run solid alod the beam to a braided line, and then a small bit of pipe into the caliper from braided line.

anyone else ran their pipe that way?

also i read about needing a compensator or bias valve, i think my cab already has one, but can someone let me know what is needed.

with a bit of help, this should save some time for a few people and give a definitive list of parts needed to do the conversion.

Yes

anyone else ran their pipe that way?

Yes my tin top has that set up . But from the rear compensator [different to a cabby]

also i read about needing a compensator or bias valve,

Your car should have the later compensator fitted to the master cylinder they only feed the rear lines .

it does have the compensator.

question chudd: why run flexi to brake pipe then use braided pipe to caliper,

a braided pipe should be used instead of standard flexi to give better braking as it stops the expansion of a flexi pipe under braking. so going from flexi to copper then to braided is the same as going from flexi to solid pipe. (correct me please if i am wrong) so you should really change the flexi's to braided and run copper pipe to the calipers to gain the benefits of braided lines.

am i right?

got a few pics today of what to do, now waiting for my h/brake cables to turn up tomorrow and should be there once its bled up.

i used my bearing from my drums as the ones i had in the disks i got from my mate were shot!

anyway i'll finish it off tomorrow hopefully and get some more better pics of the final bits and bobs and get it written up.

Regards flexi pipes on the rear beam .

I looked at the tin top set up and decided [while doing a disk conversion ] that it would be easier to run copper solid lines to the rear compensator x2 . Run 2 flexi pipe [on simple home made bracket]  to rear beam , change to copper pipe then flexi to caliper . This saved the terrible job of routing the old solid pipes behind the fuel tank and then having short flexi pipes in a position from the car to the beam .

  

I made all my flexi pipes using Auto quip from Rally design .

i did mine useing the standard compensators, when i put the 16v servo and master cylinder in i made up a a 3inch copper brake line with a male on one end (the compensator end) and a female on the other to go to the master cylinder :)

The set up on a Cabriolet is similar to a MK2 GTI , you need to run solid pipes to the rear beam , change to flexi [drop on to beam] , solid again then flexi to caliper .

brakes

all piped up and bled last night, the handbrake cables are a bit of a pain in the butt to get right and get sorted. (they are running at almost maximum slackness.

thinking of cutting the adjusted thread off of my old drum cables and welding them to the new cables to give them a bit more length and adjusting a bit easier.

just got to adjust my wheel bearings, and give it a test drive!
