Rear axle removal

Guys, can anybody out there advise me on removal of my rear axle? (1990 mk1 cabrio)
Found the fault of my stuttering car to be the dreaded rusty fuel filler neck.
I have emptied the tank and found loads of crap in it, so decided to replace the tank and filler neck.
Been told i need to remove the rear axle to remove the fuel tank just not sure how.

use plenty of plus gas or similar on the four nuts/threaded sections, clean them up if you can. saves for tears later.

hi the four nuts  and spacer are still available from vw bought last week few quid.
