hehe cool shame you can't really get away with it in the UK. the joys of water ice and salt on roads. still i like the insane height of the first one.

therapy?? WHY

I also think the rat look is cool, and if it wasnt for the rubbish roads in the UK I'd have mine like that…

I was in america earlier this year and they love the rat look, got some great pics of loads of hot rods like it…

i think that with that ride height you may have to chop your springs in half. thats if it even has any. maybe just some blocks of wood. still if i didn't like polishing my car so much i'd think about doing it.

The second one looks mint (that means brilliant in my neck of the woods, not immaculate!)

Anyone know how they get that "look", surely can't be real rust. If it is the car will be gone in a year or two which seems rather pointless :dontknow:

Not sure, I've seen a brand new Mk5 with exactly the same effect on the bonnet! Maybe it's some sort of matt pastey paint, then randomly sanded to look patchy?!

Real rust all the way!! The second car has just been 'bare metaled' and left to the elements. The first one is just a bit battle scared!! And you are quite correct, time is not on their side, although if the USA car is in a dry state it shoud last many years yet. The aircooled crowd have been running this style for years, this is mine

Seem all a bit pointless and wasteful. The mk1 at the top of this page will be dead in a year or two, the rust will just eat through it (the a-posts look well rotten already). Rather ironic considering how much effort some put into stopping them rusting

I really like the first one, and if you look at the detailing on the engine and in the engine bay, it's all really clean and well put together.

Proper rat look is a good solid chassis, with well engineered underpinnings and a distressed outer. So it's effectively just a safe if not safer than a 'shiney on top' car. Judging by the ride height I think the first one is on air bags or hydraulics.

The second one is just a poor effort, I hate that baremetalled look, at least the other one has character.

i love the rat look and rally like it on a splitty. if its done right and not some half a**e lazy type person who just cant be bothered cleaning his car i.e you open the bonnet and find a shinny well maintained motor or porsche conversion looking back at you. there was one floating about on the scene a few years back that ran some silly 1/4 mile times but looked like it was made of rust. not seen it for a while though.

The golf at the top of this page looks ace  8)

Wouldnt like to own i though I dont think. Not sure why probably just the fact its a 'rust bucket'?  :dontknow:

Although its good too look at!

Strip the paint, let it rust a bit and then laquer it or wax it.

Job done, NICE.

the "rat" looks an aquired taste…….but they do look quite good i suppose, its kind of a pop at the modding scene too, which in an age of mega paint jobs and stuff goes to show even a rusty old dented mk1 or any car come to that can still be cool

there was a "group" of various vw and old escorts turning up all the shows last year, an old caddy on silly wide 13`s with a camo net and oil cans in/on it which was barely.. if at all road legal was being driven like a proper sausage in Ultimate Dubs car park when i left..shortly followed by a police T5   oh i did chuckle

I still prefer shiney paint on my cars though
