Rattle on decelerating around 2500rpm???

Hi folks,

My Mk1 GTI has a rattle when I decelerate. Doesn't sound like engine trouble, sounds more like something flappy that's loose and the resonance of the engine is making it rattle. Anyone had experience of this before?

look for loose tin metal heat shields, theres one under the car between the exhaust and the rubber boot under the gear stick, another on the stweering rack and maybe one clamped round the downpipe somewhere. the one on my gearstick boot was pretty close thanks to custom downpipe so it took carefull tweaking to keep it away
