Just want to see how far in the slot its meant to sit.

It sits flush with the heater panel beneath it. I think the SONY tape deck units that were about at the time/fitted in early Mk3's stick out a bit further.

Just bought a tape deck from a clipper and it sticks out roughly half inch.

Yeah that looks really nice.

Is it mounted properly? The last half inch needs a bit of a wiggle and the wiring plugs out of the way to get it slid in properly. There should be a locating pin/lug on the back of the stereo if its standard ISO fitment.

This pic shows a plastic surround that sits just behind the face.
It has some clips in it that hold it in place.
This one shows the side of the radio where there is 2 clips above & below the screw which when pressed allow the surround to move.
This pic shows the thickness of the surround once moved.
The radio slides in as far as the clip in the first pic.

It locks in place with the plastic surround.

It seems odd for it all to clip in from the front - how does it come undone? Does it have a key of some sort to prevent theft or just pull out?
The old head units (pre-DIN cage) used sandwich plates with 1 at the front of the fascia and one on the back that sandwiched together through the tuning knobs. That's what makes me think the plastic clip should go behind the fascia.

Settling In
radio fitting
Looks to me like the spacer surround section should clip into the dash first then the radio slides in, but if it locks in the radio will not be removed without the release tools like these, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Audio-Radio-Stereo-Tool-Set-Release-Removal-Key-/220875932442?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item336d3b431a

Could the plastic clip be taken off the stereo, put through the DIN slot and clipped onto the fascia on the reverse side, then push the radio through and it should lock in place. See quick sketch below…

Theres no picture coming up for me mate.
Well when I clipped it in from the front it would just take light force to pull it out.
However the first part of your post sounds like a good idea.
Ill give it another go the weekend.
