radiator

Hi all, i have a 1.3 82 golf and it seems to be running a bit of a temprature. The head gasket ,water pump, thermostat and hoses have been replaced as well as the radiator flushed and it still runs the temprature hand at three quarters and heats up from a cold start very quickly. It has a radiator with no expansion tank. Was wondering is this normal or has someone chaged it at some point. im askin this because there is a empty bracket on the passengers side wing.

If the fans kicking in and its not boiling up, its fine.

i thought it is strange that the car instantly heats from a cold start and goes straight to three quarters. the fan kicks in as soon as it hits three quarters and stays on while im driving along. i fear the traffic jams incase of it going pop

How quickly is straight away? And is it all the way to three quarters or is it more like 5/8's? Was it doing it before all the parts were replaced? And are there any other running symptons i.e. high rev idle

Could be a faulty coolant temp sender, but if it's around the 5/8's it should be fine.

no its more like three quarters. the temp sender was changed too. it heats within half a mile of a cold start. not sure it did this before,  the head gasket was leaking when i got the car so i never drove it and that was one of the first thing that was done. come to think of it could it be the wrong gasket that went in.

Fan shouldn't be on once underway in free moving traffic, only if idling for a while or doing a 3 point turn in warm weather etc. Are you sure its on all the time when engine is warm/hot?

mine did the same 1.8gti ,i changed the rad fan switch and temp sender and that didnt cure it it still ran at three quarters when driving , i then replaced the thermostat and flushed the system and filled with blue coolant, its fine now it only goes 1 third of the way up when driving but as said if sitting in traffic etc it will go just slightly above half, to note my engine has a stainless 4 branch which is heat wrapped and the engine bay is still hot ,MFA tells me oil temp is normally between 88-96 degrees, i just think they are notorious for running hot....

thermostat

If the temp gauge is reading hot from a cold start after a couple of mins, change your themostat, its obviously
sticking closed. Its a £4 part!Change it regardless, your temp gauge shouldnt be reading that high!

even if stat was stuck closed i doubt it would heat up to 3/4 wirthin a mile, id say its a more serious issue or the new temp sensor is wrong/duff.

could be an air lock as well i guess. heres a copy/paste of my coolant faq, take a look thru it ands see if that helps:
f you have an issue with the coolant system, the 1st thing to change is the header tank cap (MK1/2/3 Golf/Polo/Passat etc). The older black caps have a problem with the pressure valve in the cap which can vent to late/early, so its always a good idea to upgrade to a new blue one.

The system takes just over 5 litrs when empty, there will always be some coolant left in the block unless you remove the thermostat though
Use G12+ coolant from VW, or G12 from AVS Car Parts - [The VW - Audi - Seat - Skoda Parts Specialist]
Use at least 40% coolant, I normally use a 50:50 mix in my GTI 8v and it runs nice & cool

Bleeding the system after refilling:
Run the engine from cold with the cap off and rev it to 2k now and again. While you are doing this squeeze all the pipes you can get your hands on, and keep the coolant level topped up. In addition, whenever you rev the engine you should see a steady stream of coolant/bubbles spray out of the thin hose to the top of the header tank, if not the hose/rad is blocked, or the waterpump is bust. It will eventually start to boil over, at this point or when the hoses get too hot to touch turn the engine off. Once its settled down top it up to the max mark and you should be good to go!

Checking the operation of the system:
Check the lower rad pipe is stone cold until the temp gauge reaches the half way point, if it gets lukewarm straight away then the thermostat is stuck open or missing, if it stays cold then it is stuck shut.
Check the fan kicks in when the gauge gets near 3/4, if not disconnect the plug from the radiator sender in the bottom, passenger side of the rad & bridge the pins. If the fan spins then the temp sender is broken, if not jump the fan direct from the battery, if it still dont spin then the fan is knackered

Yeah buy a new cap so simple yet can really make a difference, full g12+ flush as well. Had problems with the mk2 lately so been sorting this kind of stuff. Easiest way to check the stat is start the car cold and hold the bottom rad hose, if it gets warm before the gauge hits half way stuck open, stays cold all the time then stuck closed.
