race / rally / sprint / hillclimb mk1's

how many mk1's are in the club that are regulary used in competition or trackdays etc..
im currently in the process of building a mk1 for sprinting/hillclimbs and the odd trackday and 1/4 mile as i sold my pulsar gti-r in favour of n/a reliability
just wondered how many used there golfs in anger

post pics and spec  8) i need inspiration

mines almost there ish
im waiting for a cage to be made by the rollcentre at the moment then the inside can be all fitted
inside :
rollcentre 6 point cage with X rear and doorbars
sparco evo2 seats
sabelt 3" harnesses
flocked dash with carbon to cover heater vents / controls etc..
carbon door cards
no heater
stripped as much as possible with all black sound deadening removed
hydraulic handbrake
pedalbox with seperate master cylinders etc..
lines all run inside
sparco plumbed in fire extinguisher
and all painted white

outside
basically everything has been removed and replaced with new like :
hubs
wheels bearings
steering rack
polybushed everywhere
fully adjustable avo coilovers
strenghthened wishbones
rear brake conversion
refurbed standard brakes  using mintex discs allround and pads
aeroquip brake lines
new tank and fillerneck
new bumpers/grill/badges/fuel cap
carbon bonnet.

choice of wheels include 15"compomotive mo's / 15" bbs rs with 2" and 1.5" dishes /13" weller steels / 15" bbs ra's
will be running toyo r888's

engine wise will just be a kr 16v with nice cams  run on a set of carbs to keep things simple

things to to purchase are exhaust system (i have a 16v conv manifold) carbs and manifold, fuel pump, fpr,

here is how 'jaffa' is sitting at the moment with no engine in, i want to go for the berg cup arches and widen its track/run the bbs rs's but its seems criminal to butcher the arches on her as there so prefect

engine bay waiting for power plant
brake resevoirs and lines are now in though

brakes (hopefully the standard brakes will work well with a pedal box if not i will look into either 280mm or maybe a set of 4 pots like wilwoods or if budget allows ap's

car

Im currently building a track/hillclimb mk1 with a G60 motor in it.Completely stripped out,got the roof cut off it at the moment waiting for the new cage to come and weld in,then replace it with a non S/R roof. Its been on the go for about a yr now since i originally stripped it,spent most of the time rebuilding the G60 motor and charger and collecting the `right` parts for it.My everyday 2.0 16v mk1 also gets abused to within an inch of its life every day,i do trackdays in it and an annual trip to the Nurburgring for its usual weekend 20 laps!Cant fault the car really, thats what i built it for!
Heres a link from the yr before last!

cheers for posting the vid , the orange one will be over there soon once its up and ready, and if its still not ready i'l have to take the mk2.
cutting the roof sounds a bit drastic :) i just riveted on a aluminium plate on my last mk1 (it had a glass sunroof)
i undestand why though fitting a 'proper' cage it makes life easier.
performance trim do a rather nice carbon roof skin , not cheap though

Naa cutting the roof off is nothing on a mk1,im a panel beater/welder in a place that restores classic cars, done 3 of them now on mk1`s,its no big deal! Its easier to put the cage in too before putting the roof on actually.u can get all the way round the weld easily in tight spaces, and can stand up in the car!My everyday mk1 has also has a roof swap,if u send me an email address i can send u pics of it,ive got a bad experience of sunroofs u see, when i was 19 i rolled my 205 GTI on the 33rd on the TT course at over 100mph and the sunroof smashed, the roof collapsed slightly and my head went through the sunroof hole whilst upside down and the road `scraped` away the top of my head right down to the skull,i was lucky to survive,so since then i promised myself 2x things, not to drive with crap tyres and not have a car with a sunroof! If u look at the vid i posted,u can see how well the car goes round than the previous year i went in a mk2 16v i got for £150,god that car took some stick, take a look at the video, and this mk2 is still going now over here by some young guy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlAfwNrNl5U

Ive since found the young lad who now owns it and told him about the `fine` example he paid £1800 for,i gave him the datails of it on youtube,he told me its a different car!!! Yeah, course it is! Because now hes fitted m3 mirrors to it and big bumpers that dont match up with the small bumper arches!!!!

I've recently been contacted by a couple of companies who tailor their products specially for the more race tuned cars.

Hopefully we'll be able announce discounts on performance exhausts at 20% and suspension etc (discount to be confirmed as yet).

Keep this in mind because I'm hopefully going to get this sorted next week. Obviously the discounts will be for paid members so £15.00 per year can give you great savings in one go!!!!
