question for my resto

hi peeps, im relativly new to the site and just thought i would ask my first question,
i have not long bought my second car to restore, first one being a 1972 beetle, this one being a 1982 mk1 golf cabriolet, now i am restoring this one to keep and not to sell on, but what im wondering is, i have stripped the engine down to single nuts and bolts, and i am replacing everything i can, and i mean everything, same goes with the likes of suspension brake lines brakes interior, etc etc, heres the question, the car has 66k on the clock, but when i have finished, it will be brand new, so should i get a new set of zero'd clocks? as i have no history with it etc, or should i just leave it at 66k?

cheers folks

Not sure of the legality of zeroing the clocks  and to be honest can't see the point. You'd have to have the mileage (mileage from zero + 66k) on your MOTs for instance and might look odd if you ever tried to sell it. You may be giving the car a full restoration, but it will have the same reg and chassis number and will have a V5 record of this plus year of build and registered owners. Make a record of the all the work undertaken at the the current mileage and build a service history from there on.

why restore the clocks to zero............they look better when people see the condition they are in for the miles they have done............................but then again its all down to personal preference

Could this not be something that the club could maybe look into doing? someone rebuilds their engine and emails the mileage, pics of the work being done and receipts etc and the club could send them a cert to put with the log book varifying that it was at the said mileage which the work was carried out? would have to say its not a guarantee of quality of workmanship thou…. on second thoughts this idea could maybe land the club in hot water.

when my golf was restored from the ground up there wasnt a single part that wasnt replaced, the previous owner reset the clocks back to zero but still kept a full detail of the original milage. I think its a good idea as you have essentially made a new car.

Wouldnt do it unless a FULL FULL resto had taken place.
