question about my new golf

hi there,

i just bought my first golf mark 1 cabriolet (see link below). it is a 1.8 from 1991 and was sold privately as a clipper. however there are no clipper badges on it. how do i know whether it is a clipper? i am new to golfs so i was wondering if u anyone could help? its not a gti. its got bumpers that look like those on a clipper. should it have clipper badges or stickers somewhere? if so then does anyone know how i can get hold of these?

always been a fan of mark 1 golfs and loving the car so far!

I've never owned one but don't think they had clipper badges as such. I always thought a clipper was a 'big bumpered' / side skirted 1.8 carb model and that was it but a clipper expert on here will confirm that

If its a 1.8 and fuel injected Bosch K-jetronic then the engines a GTi has it any GTi badges.
Have you no history what do the reg documents say?My V5c says golf Cabrio GTi,I ahve all the history on mine and I have owned it nearly 14 years.

clipper was a model with big bumpers. the name has become tied to all big bumper models. however it is not the case that all big bumper cars are clippers.
they also did a clipper with small bumpers.
a 91 will more than likely be a standard convertible as i think they went to big bumpers on all of them at that point. there is nothing special about a clipper i'm afriad.

Ah but 'special is in the eyes of the beholder' Moredoors man.

Here's a picture of a Clipper cabriolet, the decal is on the rear quarter panel between the filler cap and the rear light, would be in the same position on opposite side of the car too.

It might be worth checking on your V5 if it specifies 'clipper' and also asking other members with already badged Clippers if their V5 specifies 'clipper'.

Also see here for more info on Clipper models:

from looking at basic pic I'd say it could be - but show us under the bonnet - if its injection then it GTI - if its carb then its a 'clipper' but whats the log book say??

"Clipper" sounds better than "base model" - hence its use by the marketing folk at VW.

Also its become slang terminology that the big bumpers of 1987 onwards approx, (even if fitted to Clipper or GTI, or whatever) is the "Clipper kit".
