prices through the roof!

Is it me or are the price of mk1s mainly cabrios going through the roof. Yer they were a good car(in 1980/90) they are a classic and the best shape cab but peoples asking price for some of their pride and joys is ridicleous to say the least. You see the same cars for sale day in day out you see them on here on pistonheads on other vw sites and when all else fails on good old ebay. They dont sell never will in a month of sundays so it all starts again daft price no sale. The mk2 golf gti is going the same way common sense that an unmolested concours car will fetch good money so joe bloggs in his big bored lowered bodykitted suped up shed advertises his for similar money and then wonders why it dosnt sell. And then theres the "im selling my mk1 blah blah blah" someone posts reply  "im interested how much" they reply "pm me for price". Whats all that about post your price with your add or is it to embarrasing. Rant over with!…….What does anyone else think

totaly agree with you the sportline is a top of the range cab they only produced 500 red and 500 black so im led to believe so you pay top money for a top spec rare car. So why i ask you do other people advertise run of the mill tatty cabs for similar money? If its got a vw badge on it it must be worth a fortune ...musnt it? Or is it because its that special rare colour i keep reading about! do you see where im coming from.

Hmm, yeah, the number of people who  have called me to ask if I would reduce the price of my Rivage because they've seen a standard cabby much cheaper than mine (er, yeah, that's because it's not a Rivage). One woman asked me if it had power steering. It's a bloody GTI: what GTI ever has power steering?

Where are the Golf afficionados and why aren't they buying my car?

mmmmmmmmm  8O  A totally original sportline is worth that kind of money or more, but i stress ORIGINAL and complete…….people are free to price their cars as they wish..but i also have seen some ridiculous prices banding around, you have to pay for quality or nice examples…some people just assume as their car is X Y or Z model version its worth the same……and its not! heres my original sportline complete with its Recaro interior!

People are free to advertise their cars and set a minimum price for which they wouldn't sell it for, just to gauge interest. I am personally in the same position, I tried to sell mine and didn't get the money I wanted for it. However, I was in the position where I could afford to keep and run it if it didn't sell, so why not do this?

Its interesting that there is no cabby price guide. I believe it would be a useful thing to have, but it would need to be carefully researched, ie looking at 'the market' and gathering detailed information on the spec and condition of cars, and the price they're sold at etc. I'd help out with the admin/publishing side of things, if someone volunteered to do the reseach side of it.

Yeah agree on the cabby price guide……..obviously the Rivage and Sportline seem to always be from 2k upto as much as 5k for some proper mint low miles ones i have seen
Only trouble with the cabriolet is that unless its been really really looked after they look very shabby or at the very least plain and in need of tlc, the early ones still make decent money from what i have seen, a shed/project for a few hundred, or an alright example for ?800-?1500, trouble is theres so many versions people get blinded by what the car actually is! the late cars seem to hold better value from waht i have seen, i suppose with the bigger bumpers they look more modern? at the end of the day they are all virtually the same animal underneath and like anything the later the car the better spec they usually are so hold a better residual, its like anything though if its been looked after any buyer will see that and pay accordingly

My Rivage is sitting off road at a friend's place in the UK, while I'm back in France with a Quartett. I have to sell her soon, mainly because my mate is putting pressure on. So, I'm gonna have to drop the price to a stupid amount and someone's gonna get a bargain, and I'm gonna lose out. But, I am not in a position to keep her much longer. It sucks.

That does suck, it's a beautiful motor and deserves every penny of what you were originally asking…  :banghead:

Have you talked to Jennykaye though (see 'New Girl' topic in the new folks section)?  lol

Is there any evidence that the high priced cars are actually selling?

who knows but what my point is this. If a top spec cab ie sportline/rivage is for sale at say 3 grand for arguments sake  and a clipper/gti is for sale same price same condition which one would you buy? the trouble is people put to high a value on there cars and some and i stress some are unrealistic. I personaly know of someone who bought a 1990 cab in good condition for 1200 which was a fair price. The  car had previously been advertised at 3200 for 2 years with no success then 1700 and eventualy sold for an offer of 1200. although the car is in good condition it was never gonna be worth 3200 but that was the price the owner dreamt up.

When I bought mine a couple of years ago my absolute top price was going to be 2k for a very tidy one with not too many miles (up to about 120k) and good history.  When it came to the point I was happy paying an extra grand for the relative rarity and the classy look of the Rivage spec with leather, and I've not regretted it.  Wot no depreciation?

Mind you, still needed a head gasket, lots of hoses and a fuel filler neck within the first month  :?
