price range ?

hi guys new to the forum.

i'm soon to be getting a first car and as far as i'm concerned only old skool will do preferably vw, so at the mo i'm saving up/ looking at little vws to get me on the road.  i must admit i hadn't realised there was a 1 litre version of the mk1 golf until recently. they seem fairly few and far between, anyway i was just wandering if you guys could give me a heads up as to what i'd have  to pay for a half decent one, not a minter just one in not too bad nick with tax and ticket. i am fairly poor so ideally i'd want to spend not much more than 600-800 quid (is this way too low ? ) i.e the sameish that i'd pay for a mk2f polo 1L.

also when buying a mk1 what are the things to check i.e the usual problems they have ? how reliable/ economical could i expect it to be ?

i hope there not as rare as i think.

p.s. sorry for noob questions

Polo mk2f would e a good car dude mates had a few. 1l mk1s don't come around often.

There as reliable as to how you look after it if that makes sense? More maintenance you do the better they run etc and mine always give signals they're gunna break or have a problem.

Have to be mechanically interested to own an old dub too matey.
Think 800 is a little low for a mk1 myself. Could be wrong though.

cool jus tetsting the water really the polo mk2f is my most likely choice. so 800 to little? shame but i'd rather get a fairly tidy polo than a shitter of a mk1 if you get me so i'll prob just keep an eye out for the off chance that an old lady doesn't realise what she's got but doubt i'll bother really hunting. thanks for the info man.

in the price range you're looking at i'd expect any mk1 you got to be full of rust and all sorts of little niggles that need fixing, so if you want to teach yourself how to weld and spend many days out in the rain under the car getting burnt then i say join the club and go for it ;)

A x-reg 1100 'C' base model that looked tidy and claimed to be rot free went for @£1,500 on ebay last week. The days of non-GTIs struggling to clear a grand are over. A dealer has a similar car on regularly but its £3,500  8O

A 1300 MK2 prob easier to get hold of or as said a late 80s/early 90s Polo.

I would also check insurance costs first, you might find that its cheaper to insure a newer car, that you have paid more for i.e. if you have 2 grand and buy a car for £1250 it may only be 750 to insure, rather than 800 on a mk1 and then finding it costs over a grand to insure.

I had a mk2 1.3 as my first car and cost £250, i was lucky i new previous owners.
