Potential Barn Find

Alright Guys,

I'm looking for some opinions please.  I've got the opportunity of a Mk1 Barn find for a couple of hundred quid.  Its been sitting for a couple of years.  The current owner said that it'll obviously need a good clean but mechanically it'll probably need stripped and re-built, clutch has seazed amongst other things.

Its a X plate, and a GTD 5 door.  (GTI interior and alloys apparently.)

I'm looking for some advice as to what you all think I should be looking out for when I go to see it.  Has anyone else been in this situation.

I dont think it'll be a keeper, I'm thinking doing the required work etc and then shifting it on but with it being a deisel would it be worth it?   :dontknow:   What sort of doolies would a standard, reasonably conditioned totally drivable GTD fetch?

Not a lot of information to go on here guys as I've not seen it, just looking for your thoughts.

The GTD Mk1 wasn't offered in the UK…it must be an import?

Probably a price ceiling of ?1500. From the sounds of it, will cost more to restore it than final value, so a loss maker rather than a profitable exercise. Leave it for someone who wants to restore and keep the car (they'll get the use out of their efforts!) or buy it and then sell it on here as a project for a couple hundred, or simply pass on details to anyone interested.

Cheers again guys,  the more I think about it the more I'm tempted to restore it myself and keep and punt my Cabby.  I fancy going retro again so I'll need to assess the situation when I see it.

If its too much for me to take on then I'll get the details added to this post for all to see.  Its a family friend and as far as I can work out he's the second owner which is quite appealing.

Thanks for your comments guys, I'm glad once again to have this forum as contacts to help out in these sorts of situations.

P.S. I understand that the GTD might well be a Euro Import after a little bit of investigation via the web today.

even more of a reason to keep it and restore it for being a wee bit different from the norm

AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH  It was a bucket   :banghead: .

Every panel would have needing replaced and engine, box, breaks etc all stripped and re-built.  Its been sitting out for a few years by the looks of things.  Hay mud puddles etc all over the inside of the car etc etc etc.

Shame but too much work for me. Wish the boy has been a bit more honest with me so I didn't have to waste the time going to see it.

Shame but its put me in the mood for another tin top or certainly another cabby with small bumpers etc.

It was a mars red 5 door with diesel engine of some description.  GTI interior, steering wheel and wheels.  Its located just outside edinburgh if anyone was interested just PM me and I'll tell you where.  Reckon its a scrapheep challenge though I'm afraid.

Shame. It's probably just a Golf C Diesel, with the GTI interior & wheels added at some point?  :?
