Posting Pics - why obscure the plates?
HI. Just about to add my MK 1 to the register and put up a project thread for the restoration. Why do some people obscure their number plates when they put pics up? Is it a security thing? Does it mean cars get nicked to order?

because someone might steal the number plate do do a robbery or something. although i doubt anyone would do it in a mk1.

As previoulsy stated, plus they can trace the address where the car is registered from them.
I had someone do this years back (before the internet),he worked for a recovery company and traced my phone number from the address where the car was registered to and asked if i wanted to sell…. 8O ..Lucky he was a decent guy but who knows what could have happened if he was not.

My mums maestro was going to the scrap yard on a truck and someone used the reg no and done a robbery! Police came to the house to find my mum just back from the pub!! All they said was no way you could have done it! It was about 100 miles away!

but surely if your of a criminal persuasion you can just walk down the street and pick a plate, its even less hassle than turning on the computer and trawling sites to find one...

Because if someone knows your address its one step closer to stealing your identity, not likely to happen but it does happen.
Its not just about the car, its the same reason I dont post my full date of birth on Facebook, shred old bank statements and that kind of thing.

Best one is when you're in a shop buying stuff and they ask you your address etc so they can put you in a stupid database. You look around and you're surrounded by Lord knows how many people who now know all your personal details.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll take the risk…it's just a five door standard after all, much as I love it. And if the reg is nicked for some dodgy deed..might be the most fun it ever has!
