Polyurathane engine mounts NIGHTMARE!

Just picked up my Rivage from the garage after having a 2.0L AGG block fitted. I had bought some poly engine mount insterts so had them fitted as well.

OMFG!  8O The car is unbearable to drive :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead: Is the car supposed to vibrate that much? Surley not?

I can't see a decent image in the rear view mirror beacuse tha car is vibrating so much. If i were to have a passenger in the car I would have to shout at them, i'm so upset with the car as I was looking forward to taking it out for a spin with the different engine and now I don't want to go anywhere near it. :(

I had them on my last Golf and the whole dash vibrated into a blur at idle.   They stayed on for about 2 weeks before I threw the towel in and removed them.

Did they fit all 4 poly mounts or just the side inserts? If they fitted a Poly rear mount swap that back and it'll be much more bearable.

I was always under the assumption engine mounts were designed to "move" so i guess cuz they are hard they dont move enough!  :?

I have said this before, poly engine mounts on a mk1 are a no no, stick to rubber ones unless you want major vibrations !!
Don't even use the rear diesel one, because that does not have a gap in the rubber mount. You want you engine to have some breathing space to move !!!

Ade

Now you've got him worried!  8O I'm sure it'll be the mounts, i remember when I first started mine after fitting them, the best way to describe it is 'agricultural'!

Yup they fitted all 4. I've still got the rear mount so will be swapping that back over tomorrow. The front mount under the rad was split. so that'll have to stay for the minute.

I really can't believe how bad it is with the poly mounts

Just a quick thought, can I just jack the car up and swap the rear mount on my drive? The other 3 mounts are so stiff I can't imagine the engine moving much!

Yes you can swap the rear mount on the drive, it will be the biggest culprit.

The drivers side one is a biatch to replace with the engine in the car, but if they have only used the poly inserts then you may be able to take the bolt out and jack the engine up or down to pop them out. The gearbox one on the passenger side is straight forward.
The front one is just a snubber and is fine in poly, it just limits engine movement and is not load bearing, well it shouldn't be if the engine/box is sitting correctly in the other three mounts.

they are not bad at all its just they are not really designed for a road car, i had some on my track day mk1 and they were fantastic, hardly any vibration, that i could tell cos suspension was rock hard :D

you could always look into golf citi ones from south africa, cars had aircon and are slightly uprated and not comptetion only

The real benefit of hard engine mounts is better hook when accelerating from standing start, eg 1/4 mile runs.

i had them fitted for about 10 mins bob and took them straight back out, i have changed 3 of them back and like ade said i have just kept the front one polly as that makes little if any difference either way, you will change the other 3 on the drive in an hour or two :D

I was just about to fit a diesel rear mount, mine is fine but I was advised to change it. Should I just leave it alone if it causes too much vibration ??

Chris from what the lads are saying I'd leave it… if it's doing what it supposed to be doing all is well…

Cheers Hugh.

I think I will just leave it, I am glad I saw this thread as I was fitting it tomorrow  :)

Well I put a diesel one on Sharons Sportline and it shook the dash horribly !
I would just stick to the one that was designed for the engine/car

Rear mount came off easy peasy. Then I tackled the passenger side mount, not so easy. I ended up ripping it out in pieces as the mount wouldn't drop down far enough to pull it out in 1.

Any tips before I try the drivers side mount?
