Using this site below you can find all the paint codes used on VW golfs for different years
http://www.mk1vw.info/paint1.php
For a mars red color there are two types used. For cars before 1981 the code is L31B and for after 1981 the code is LA3A.
You can determine when your car was manufactured from the chassy (VIN) Number found on a plate on the front panel of the car once you open the bonnet.
You can decipher your VIN no. by inputting it here:

This is another database that has a wider range of colours. You can search by Volkswagen, then find the year you need in the page numbers.Brad. said

For example: VW 1981

If you press the 'C' next to the paint code you can view the paint chips to more easily identify the paint color

I had a look too in my 1979 brochure, but it doesn't show paint codes, next to black it just has the reference '9000'

The black paint codes always seem to have a 9000 'ditzler' reference number on the site below, wheter L41, L041, L41C.Hairyarse said

I could be mistaken, but from the brochures it seems they didn't do a black colour officially until 1980. For the black cars they seem to have used the beetle black colour L41 as can be seen in the link below:
http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcodedisplay.cgi?manuf=Volkswagen&year=1979&rows=50
In 1980 they changed the code to L041 but the reference still remained 9000
