Our first Golf...

Hello guys, we picked up our first Golf on Saturday and absolutely love it!

It is in such good condition and we travelled 260 miles to collect it. One or two things could do with a little fix but I'm sure I will find advice on here!

Let me know what you think, good or bad comments welcome as well as any questions!

looks very clean, nice to see people are still able to find good eamples like that.
Wheels are a treat, well done. :D

will always be bits that need sorting that either the previous owner lived with or couldnt fix, like you said loads of advice on the forums.
Main ones Id check first

fuel filler neck - can look ok but in fact can be totally rotton around the top of neck, this can be a real pain if not found early on.
top mounts, dampers - check the gap on top mounts and damper assembly for leaking, boots/bump stops knackered.
Cooling - check rad for signs of cracking where the top holding bars fit in and other areas, white residue. Flush and refill with vw coolent mix.

Then standard service items and then you can work your way round changing gear box oil, brake discs/pads and so on.

~Nice & clean looks well looked after & in the best colour  .What sort of miles has it done?

It hasn't even done 46,000 miles. Every MOT to back it up. I think everything except the CD player I put it in standard too.

I think the only thing that will need doing right away is the clutch. I think it is on the way out, but we did knock a little off the price so can't complain!

I'd check the adjustment on the clutch cable at the gear box before you go whipping the whole lot out to stick a new clutch in could just be that. Even if it has gone it's a pretty easy fix if your handy with a spanner and got the gear to drop the engine.

See this is where some problems will be.. I am fairly useless with a spanner but always willing to learn and I have no equipment for any heavy work! I don't even have a jack or axle stands yet (used to just borrow them!)

I am young though so have plenty of time to learn…

Looks very nice, are you going to put an original 4 lamp grille back on the front????

Get a Haynes manual and read it. Most of the stuff on these golfs is simple and requires few tools.

Gotta say the golf looks mint. I don't like the wheels but very much like the rest of it!

I love the wheels...totally original, very rare to still see them on these cars :-)

The 4 headlamp grill is already on. Picture is from the for sale advert and we have both grills :)

I don't mind the wheels, but they will be going into storage to keep them mint. Maybe some g60 steels to run around on, not sure yet!

Thanks for the comments :)

looks like a great buy, and really good mileage ! !

good to hear you put original grill back on, i went single grill and then am back to 4 light grill now :-)

G60's are a great shout, the car would still look very smart and original, think there maybe a set for sale on here at mo

Best of luck with it and enjoy

Can't you keep those lovely wheels on and just drive carefully near to curbs?.. Looking at the hood, a common problem is the tensioning cables.. As you can see the hood lifts up in a shallow arc at the sides.. These cables are about a fiver a pair on ebay and once fitted correctly should tension the hood so that it pulls straight again at the sides.. I think the 4 headlight original grill is the way forward.. Stock all the way for me.. I'd leave the wheels on and try to source one perfect one as a spare just in case you do have an accident with a curb.. But you will turn more heads if it looks like it just came off the production line as opposed to a slightly modified one.. The different wheels and different grill thing has been done to death.. Ask yourself, how many totally standard ones have you seen lately?…. And also why you appreciated it so much when you saw it..

Thanks for the comments guys!

The passenger side headlamp cover seems to have been loose and is now missing. I think it could do with a set of 4 headlamp covers though… anyone suggest a good place to look? Bigboystoys?

I wouldn't know what to search for on eBay but I agree that would help. It almost feels like the window is open and I imagine that is a small contributing factor.

I know the wheels are quite smart and I would like to keep it as original as possible, but I can't help feeling that the sea air and the british roads are going to batter them!

Nice quartette model, colour coded Avus snowflake wheels too, looks in good nick too.
Bowing above the windows as Walt has pointed out can be the side cables and can be caused by the vynil shrinking too.
What's the hood like?
Any tell tale signs of leaks?
Great low mileage too.
I like these standard cars, looks like a good one.

The hood is actually very good. One small tear which overhangs the passenger window and after a 4 hour drive in the rain yesterday it didn't leak! So far so good.

I have contacted a local company with regards to a mohair replacement but that isn't the most important thing. Can anyone give me any advice on what I need to search for with regards to these cables?

With regards to the wheels, the technology available when refurbing these wheels is amazing, there is nothing that couldnt be restored many years down the road.....when I bought my cabby the wheels were knackered, but took them to pristine wheel refurbishing and oh dear god, they look better than brand new again........and I dont quite know what you mean when you say headlamp covers?? Could you post a pic of what you mean and I am sure one of us can easily point you in the right direction mate.

I can't get a picture just now but…

Its the (what I assume is plastic?) cover/lens? Don't know if that helps?

Nice looking car you got there mate.

If theres a tear in the roof then the water getting in the tear must be going somewhere, thats why it was top of my list when I bought my car.

As reguards the cables then im sure the place that finally does the roof will be able to supply them.

If you want them now then you can get them from big boys toys, crazy quiffs or even ebay.

There quite cheap aswell.

No mate sorry, I'm a bit lost there…..maybe someone else will jump in and know what they are……do you mean they are an aftermarket plastic lense that goes over the original lights???If so, I wouldnt bother with them as they are not necessary….
