There's a thread somewhere in Your Cars and Projects of my black car. I'd have liked to keep it completely original, maybe one day it will revert back to it, but at the moment I'm kind of addicted to the sub-6 second 0-60mph acceleration etc so it will stay "modified".

I'd say if it was mint/had lots of history then keep it original but would depend on the car, if it was a rebuild then unique but that's my opinion and ultimately when it comes down to it's your car and it's up to you.

Your car do what you want realy. Only thing that stops you is either Skills, money, imagination, lack of time, no space or all of them combined. You should do what you want to the car as you have to drive it

It dunt fit

and if your an original person why is it ..is it for car shows or because u think the mk1 is better as it was wen it left the factory….its a forum discuss :)

I've had my cabby for 7 years now. When I bought it, it had flat paint and had generally been abused. Paperwork was present but not whole so I had a base standard car with a number of faults.

I'd looked at the 'scene' over the previous few months and everything was going towards modified… so I took the standard route.

My thinking was that there are so many modified cars on the scene that totally standard cars are getting fewer and fewer at shows and in magazines. You only have to look at the publications to see that. Since VWmotoring went out of print its left a big gap in the market - it was a magazine that covered mainly standard cars across the VW range. The only other option is VWriver and thats not exactly easy to find at your local garage is it?

To find a totally standard car these days is getting really hard. I had mine in the show n shine last year - knowing its secret flaws, I was interested to see how it would fair in the judging.
Out of 100 it dropped 3 points and those were for an incorrectly placed earth wire, wrong interior mats and something else that I can' remember. I was pleased with the result but it just goes to show how few totally statandard motors there are around. All the others that looked standard at a distance had either lowered suspension, wrong wheels, wrong interior etc so they couldn't be classed as standard in the true sense.

For me standard is the way to go = always against the tide!!!

So does that make standard 'unique' now???? :dontknow:

I concur. Standard seems to be in the minority now. Whilst i can see the merits of both and i have myself always ran a non standard MK1 in the past, its stock as a rock for me now.

I have an (almost) standard Golf too, though. So its like a best of both worlds. Unfortunately, one day I'm going to have to choose which ONE car I can keep, or whether to combine the best bits of both and lose the 'standard' status of the standard one, for the sake of the mods which make it so fast. For now though, I have both.

I honestly think it costs more and takes more effort to keep a car standard, than do mild modifications on it. Note how many of the mods available off the shelf are to replace components which wear out - suspension, exhaust, etc.

"Modifications" spans such a wide variety you can't really generalise, so I don't think its as simple as that.

Most 'modified' cars are either only slightly better, or not as good, as original ones, but some modified cars are way better. Originality certainly helps the value, but a tastefully modified car will achieve more, if the mods are done well enough and are significant enough.

Condition is much more important than originality, really, except when it gets to concours condition low mileage cars.

I like unique cars which haven't gone too far e.g. bright pink paint.  I think if a car has been tastefully modified then its a winner.  But i do also like to see standard cars around.

The question relates to holding value, not sales price. There are modded cars with 30-40k spent on them fetching 6-8k. A standard restored car with nut and bolt resto costing ?10-15 will still fetch ?8k-?10k come selling time. A standard car will win every time on money spent versus return.

As mentioned before, modded cars are becoming less unique with many look the same having the same mods. Standard cars are by comparison a lot harder to find.

having had 5 project mk1 s inc 2 full rebuilds one of which was as standard as poss . the standard was hard work cos you are seeming to follow spec all the time  :banghead: and only achieve wat has been done perfectly before in a factory . and once finished its finished . on the other hand building to imagination is lots more fun and rewarding yr spoilet 4 choice in the parts department . colour .interior.engine.wheels.soundsystem. ect ect keeps your interest going till the end result is mot and road legal . my latest compleated full rebuild was road legal 4 years ago but since then i have modified it 50 times uprating parts tweaking and trying differant things keeping my interest alive and kicking now into my 20 th year of golfs and loving it  :D
