Cheers for that , liking the idea of having a gtd lump fitted ……. Don't like the idea of breaking up a good original mk1 diesel and. A good original mk2 GTD , but have most of bits to make up a mk1 GTD. can't decide what to do :-/

I know what you mean. My Mk1 D has just had a new head gasket, but it was always a chance that something more sinister was wrong. I would've ripped the TD out of my Mk2 in a heartbeat if it meant I could keep the Mk1 on the road. A Mk1 TD would be a good laugh. As it happens the original engine was perfectly saveable and now runs better than it has in a while. I'm proud to still be running the original engine for a while longer and keep the car original.

Can you not modify the original engine to fit a Turbo & run it as a GTD

Was the original Mk1 GTD not just normal N/A diesel with GTi clothing?
The Mk1 Golfs older and better looking sibling……..

Nope it had a Turbo, Just like the MK2 1.6 TD.

You mean it came with a bottle of lighter fluid to help get the coal burning quicker?

The Mk1 GTD's were only 82 and 83 euro wise. They were 70 to 75 hp if I remember correctly.
Basically a GTI with a Turbo Diesel engine. I would love to have a true euro GTD, but they are very scarce!!
USA got TD MK1's Rabbits in 83 and 84 (very scarce) only and 83 and 84 Mk1 Jetta TDs
I had/have 83 factory TD Rabbit, but it go to be structurally unsafe at the rear axle area.
The engine is now powering a 79 Rabbit/Golf 2 door and is slightly tuned on. It is a blast to drive!!

Would they have had an intercooler ? And what gearbox did they use ? …….
I have a. mk2 gtd and a very solid, original lhd diesel …….tempted to fit the gtd engine into the mk1 using a 4+e box , …….love the idea of a mk1 gtd, but hate the thought of breaking two good cars …what would you do ?

No sir they did not have an intercooler. Strange, but it is VW you know. :?
Trans code is possibly 6G or a 7G 5 speed.
If your Mk2 GTD is nice I personally wouldn't part it out for the engine. That is me though.

I can vouch for a gtd in a mk1. My daily is a mk1 panel van with a mk2 gtd lump with the water cooled turbo. Easily as nippy as any of the mk1 Gti's i have had. Love it although i am still mourning the Turbo diesel steering wheel that was snatched from under my nose on this site.

will take a picture tomorrow and post it. have not fitted an intercooler yet but its on the to do list. The Gtd diesel engine is the one to have by all accounts as its very tunable.

Does a Mk2 TD engine 'drop straight into' a Mk1 D engine bay, or do you have to modify the mounts or something?
Posted

No they do not just drop in. The engine mounts have to be swapped over from a Mk1.
