one last drive before winter....fail!

Some tech advice needed please!!  :banghead:

One last drive before winerising My Campaign…..sounded like a great idea….

started fine after two months in the garage, left it to idle for about 15mins then took it for a spin

It started to backfire and kangaroo about 1 mile into the drive, I pulled over and the idle was spot on, but when I gave it some revs it just popped/backfired and tried to die. I managed to limp it home in 2nd gear…really slowly then it just died on the driveway. Now it refuses to start.

- Undid the fuel filter(only two months old) and it's getting plenty of new/clean fuel ok….and that's about as far as I got as the battery died and it got dark…and it's tooo cold to start striping things tonight!

- Apart from making sure there is a good spark from each plug…any other obvious golf traits to look for?

- It is kept in a garage so shouldn't be a damp problem…

The only other thing I can think of is I left it to idle on quite a steep incline (back sloping down steeply) ….so maybe as the tank is fairly low on fuel it has sucked up some shit as it was on such a steep angle?!!

Thoughts please! :dontknow:

I would put my money on the timing belt

surly if the timing chain had gone you would know about it…If that slipped/snapped it would have been game over fairly quickly? No?

I want to say it feels more like fuel/timing/condenser/injection….sort of flavour!

I need to check the sparks really!!

I could well be wrong though.

Keep em coming…..

thanks

Hi
fill the tank , being involved in a few posts lately where lack of Fuel or Fuel that is past it sell by date has being the source of the problem

Hi

yeh, maybe, it shows over quarter of a tank though, and the fuel is only a few months old. also it has a fairly new tank and filler neck (about 3 years old)

I hope it is a fuel issue though and not something more £££

I will stick a jery cans worth in in the AM and try a fresh battery, check sparks….and cross my fingers!

I love the sh*t out of my golf, but it does try my Patience some times!  :banghead:

I had a similar problem to this and found that water had got into the fuel tank, and occasional it would pass through and try to fire, I spotted it as it separated from the fuel when it passed through the filter. Bit strange that it didn't start again though…

i reacon it sucked some rubbish into the tank, as it will be fine on tick over but then when it's working under heavy load it needs more fuel and can#t get it

take the rear seat out and have a look in the inspection hole, if you see loads of bits floating about then this is the problem :)

hth :)

Inspection hole you say, didn't know I had one!

I will try to find said hole in the AM…what side? more pointers please.

hummmm…yeh, dirty lines starving the engine of enough fuel was my first thought..

Check the inlet side of the fuel pump…

There is (should) be a little gauze filter about the size of a large thimble. This catches any large debris before it goes inside the pump. I had exactly the same symptoms some years back. Car played up for about six weeks. Ended up this filter was full of grit, sand, crap, you get the picture…

Cleaned, re-inserted, re-assembled and all was well!

Edit to add, exactly as pictured is chudd's thread, as linked in the above post!

Could be the uplift pump?

thanks guys, that link is key, very helpfull.

if she doesn't run today I will try to have a look at the tank insides and filters/pump etc.

when I took the fuel filter off this morn and turned the key the pump produced a lot of fuel at the union (filled a large spraypaint can lid in about 2 secs) so it's getting fuel ok, maybe it's not enough though, or maybe the block is at the injection side now? possible?

check for fuel from your injectors if theres none there more than lilkely you have a stuck plunger within the metering head,if thats the case and you have to free it off mind you dont loose the spring when you take the plunger out.

Had similar with our Polo and it was down to knackered HT leads, I'd check your sparks and rule it out before you mess with the fueling.

….soooo

had a quick look at lunch….zero spark

may be the Coil as it died slowly/on off…could be the HT lead from the coil - dizzy.

I'll get the voltmeter out later.

who wants to take bets on what it is?!

i dunno but spray all the ht leads with WD40. if it all works then you know its the leads breaking down :)

its an old trick lol.

could be that, or like you said, the coil.. :)
