gonna give the golf a good service and was wondering what type of oil would be best?

You forgot to say what kind of engine too. Unsure if it makes a massive difference but it might. I only know what I feed my GTI.

Castrol 15/40 high mileage goes in my 117k clipper.

Both Shell and Comma list 10w40 as the recommended grade for Golfs 75-92.

The Shell is better, however I imagine the Castrol equivalent grade is the same if purchased.  I tend to always go by original recommendations rather than thicker.  Also IF oil is recommended by an oil supplier, only the grade recommended carries a warranty…

x2 on the Castrol 15W40 High Milage, perfect for these old engines.

Use nothing else in my GTi.

well mine is a 1.3 driver and has done 106k.
