Oil Pressure - VDO - Urgent!

Anyone have any ideas why the needle on my oil pressure gauge on my VDO Audi 80 clocks is going off the scale when connected??

My Battery and Oil temp are both working. Slightly confused with this one!!!

Thanks In Advance

Sounds to me like you have the wires connected in the wrong order.

All the wires came already sorted. Im not sure if there is any specific sender required on top of the oil filter housing for the pressure????

There is…..you need the sender to match the gauge.

Ahhhhh - Then thats probably why then - Thanks Paul!!!!

Any ideas where can one of these be obtained?

Change the polarity should solve the problem.

Off the same Audi 80 you had the gauges from....

I had the same problem when only the positive was connected, connected the ground wire to the sender on the side of the engine all works fine now. (Yellow wire in engine bay coming off the white block in fuse box)

ive got Audi 80 gauges in so if you need any help let me know.

Sounds about right, in general for gauges. I'd assumed you'd already correctly connected them up, and had done basic checks like checking earth, +12V feed, etc in which case the only remaining thing it can be is the sender. I don't know the electrical details, but I know the senders are different and need matching to the gauge, and are electrically different for the MFA too.

I now only have the posotive connected due to having no sender. But when connected to the standard sender on top of the oil filter it throws a wobbly! Jumping around everywhere. Tell me, what does the yellow wire going into a sender on the right hand side of the engine block - Under rocker cover and above the water pipe?

There should be 3 connections on the back of the gauge - -ve (earth), +12V and G which goes to the single terminal on the sender.

The place you've described is the stock location for the oil temperature gauge as fitted to GTIs.  Its quite possible its an oil pressure switch, or oil pressure gauge, since they all go into the same thing - an oil channel. But its sender has different electrical properties to the Audi 80.

I've had lots of audi 80 guages and senders they will all work fine if you wire them up correctly!

Infact, I've used other gauges, ie smiths with no problem. Its not rocket science.

I agree mate the sender on top of the oil filter is the oil temp sender.

i didn't know the audi 80 gauge is different to the stock golf one though so does that mean it wont work properly/give out wrong readings?

The sender on the right of the engine exactly where you described is the oil pressure switch 1.8bar, there is another oil pressure switch 0.3bar with a Blu\Blk wire coming off it (sorry cant remember where it is in bay) but i never could get a reading on the gauge using that (guessing its not made for a gauge, maybe used for the MFA??)

You need the Audi 80 pressure sender, if you don't already have it.

You need a Audi twin pole ipressure sensor so you have an mfa reading as well as vdo gauge.

Ebay I think

Nice one - just on the lookout for one!

How do I get the oil temp on MFA working as well as the VDO?

Thanks

You will need a T-piece from demon tweaks part no is-

LMA050/M 1
OIL GAUGE T-PIECE M10X1 TO M10X1
 only £7.90 with postage

This should help give a clearer idea.

I have an 88 cabbie, and i have the audi gauges in, but i am in the us, an the us models all came with the three gauges in the center console, and there is a big round sender that goes in the end of the head, I can send you one if you dont mind a bit of postage, lol, as there are always loads of cabbies in the pick'n'pull (wreckers), I am originally from yorkshire tho, so understand whats involved in sending things from the states.
