Number Plate in Windscreen...
I'm thinking of relocating the front number plate to the windscreen, because I like MK1 fronts without the plate, just a few questions:
Is it legal?
Would I be letting myself in for a world of pain by removing the corroded plate brackets?
Are goons in Paxo's gonna start wavin at me (Cos I really don't want that!)?

I'd guess that it is illegal as it wont reflect properly/ visability will be poor with the reflection and the plate has to be displayed as near horizontal as possible.
The metal holder is easy to remove though.

Putting your number plate on the dash is illegal, it has to be securley fitted to the front of the vehicle be it bumper, bonnet …..
using the words "officer it fell off last night/ I had my plates nicked and just got new ones, going home to fit them now" will not work

I had the misfortune to have both my number plates stolen and was advised by the police that a peice of paper in the window would be ok to allow me to drive to the shop to get new ones.
Don't think it's a viable long term solution though, unless you can convince the police that you are permenantly driving to Halfords. :dontknow:
Incedently the stolen number plates were then used in a robbery, then the car was burned out. This led to an interesting discussion with the police at 8.30am in the morning on my doorstep. With them insisting they had my burned out car at the yard and me insisting it was sitting safe and well outside my mum's house.
Sorry this is not a very helpfull input, but it reminded me of this storey and thought it was a good one to share.

i was at the park today and i have my numberplate in my front windowscreen and a police man on a pedal bike was taking number plates down on some kind of list,he looked at my car and never said a word.
To add to it,my number plate is black (pre 73 plate) and is not legal no matter where it is positioned
so basically yes it may well be illegal but i think it will all depend on the officer looking at it and whether he is having a good day or not

it is very much illegal. A few years back i could get away with german plates or retro style ones but now they are really cracking down. especially you being a bloke you will not be let off very easily.
if it is not reflective - ie. you have a sticker of your number plate on your bonnet or windscreen it is illegal as it would not reflect for speed cameras or for other people to read. The number plate has to be clearly displayed in the front of your car.
Sometimes if you put it on the dash and say it fell off you might get away with it but if you purposly mount it there you will get a fine and 3 points.
i wouldnt bother. I prefer mine mounted to the front of the car but take off the old rusty mounting bracket. Position the plate just under the front bumper and mount it with sticking fixers onto the front panel.
Looks really smart.

Right if you get caught with black and silver plates or plates not secured to the vehicle Police will
1. give you a ?30 ticket no points
2. give you notice to correct the fault within 14 days. if you fail to do this then it's NIP time.
3. give you a warning as they are having a good day

what if it was made out of reflective sticky stuff? there are a number of cars out there with them (usually super cars). lots of info on the dvla site: http://www.dvla.gov.uk…s_registration_marks.aspx but it seems fairly open to interpretation in some areas.

Thanks for the input dudes! I think I might go with the idea of removing the brackets and fixing it underneath the bumper. Cornwall's pretty quiet and I've only ever been stopped once by the fuzz (Driving a Jetta during RTTS) but I'd rather not risk gettin pulled!
Next question: long rectangle plates or square ones?

What's so bad about the original number plate holder?

i think the rectangle one just below the bumper on the front panel looks nice.
nothing is wrong with the bracket if yours is good but they always rust and the arms snap!

From a 'very reliable source… see the following. If you can understand it then you should consider a job change!!!
Regulation 6 of the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 specifies the rules for the fixing of front registration plates on or after the relevant date.
6(1) This regulation applies to vehicles, other than works trucks, road rollers and agricultural machines, first registered on or after the relevant date.
6(2) Except as provided in paragraph (5), a registration plate must be fixed on the front of the vehicle in the manner required by paragraph (3).
6(3) This paragraph requires the plate to be fixed -
(a) vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable,
(b) in such a position that in normal daylight the characters of the registration mark are easily distinguishable from every part of a relevant area having the diagonal length specified in paragraph (4).
6(4) The diagonal length of the relevant area is -
(a) in the case of a mark having characters the width of which is at least 57 millimetres, 22 metres,
(b) in the case of a mark having characters the width of which is 50 millimetres, 21.5 metres,
© in the case of a mark having characters the width of which is 44 millimetres, 18 metres.
6(5) In the case of a motor cycle or a motor tricycle which does not have a body of a type which is characteristic of the body of a four-wheeled vehicle -
(a) a registration plate must not be fixed on the front of a vehicle if it was first registered on or after 1st September 2001,
(b) a plate need not be fixed on the front of the vehicle if it was first registered before
1st September 2001.
