Newbie with questions with the new golf

Hello.

I am from HK. I have just bought a 1989 Golf cabriolet 1.6 , but i had few questions.

1. I am not sure it is a Clipper, MK1 or a MK2, can anyone teach me how to classify?

2. The roof of the car is broken, how can i repair the soft top? Can I order a replacement somewhere?

3. The Attenna is broken, is it easy to find a replacement?

Thank you.

OK.

First things first, there is nowt mk2 about your car.

There are differernt varients on mk1 golf cabrios clipper is effectively refering to spec, gti, gli, rivage, sportline etc etc
It may have a body kit commonly refered to as a clipper kit its not called this technically but hey ho! who cares now, if it has a body kit this dosent make it a clipper but an 89 chances are it is, bit early for run out models.

When you say broken what do you mean?? ripped, wont open, wont close?

I guessed ripped so yeah northen hoods your best bet for a new skin. bout £300notes

Antenna whats up with it not working, snapped, wont come up? its pretty easy if you are handy with a spanner……..  :|  are you?

And lastly a lot people on this forum are uber class with mk1 golfs but they aint mind readers, they will and can help if you ask the correct questions. If you arnt good with words a pictures says it all!!!  :D not gettin narky just advice.

Hi Mate,
Welcome to the club.
yep chris is right your Convertible is a MK1.
The metal roof cars changed over from the mk1 to the mk2, so the convertibles were given a facelift by giving them the big bumper look hence the clipper kit as these were the most produced car with some of them sharing mk2 components.
My car is a 1988 clipper so has a  mk2 starter motor!
The next version came out when the golf went to the mk3 shape.
a little confusing I know.

There may be some badges that denote your model as chris states mine has the clipper sticker on it
like this

you can see the sticker to the rear of the car just above the middle trim next to the orange indicator/lights.

Being as your in HK you could get a kit off E bay.com and refurb the whole lot yourself.
If the top is damaged you can get those fairly cheaply too
they can be made from vynil or mohair/canvass which tends to be more expensive.

If you are handy there is a guide to replacing the top on here.
I am not sure where in Hong Kong you would find a fitter, but looking under car trimmers in the phone book may help.

If the antenna is on the wing you will need to jack up the car on the side the antenna is and take the wheel off, underneath there is a plastic liner that fits into the wheel arch, which is screwed into place, simply undo these and lower the liner down which will give you acsess to the bottom of the antenna, which is usually held on with a nut on the top of the antenna.

Here is the pics of my golf.

1. The roof of the car is ripped by scratching. I dunno whether i can replace the fabric only without replacing the rack.
I dunno whether i can find good garage for this one.

2. the attenna of the car is missing. It should be at the front wing of the car. I just want to have one even it is not working just for good looking. The car has installed a new one inside the car.

3. As the pic shown, the car got the same big bumper same as Clipper, but i cant find the Clipper sign anywhere.

4. My car is 1595cc and produced in 1989.

The top can be replaced without changing the frame.
you can do this yourself.

You can put any antenna on.

are you sure the engine size is correct?

have you got a photo of the interior and close up pictures of the roof damage?

does the roof go up and down okay?

Does it have a UK number plate as I can see that it has the GB sticker on the back?

The engine is 1.6.

It is with a Hong Kong plate. The GB is a sticker putting on by the ex-owner.

agreed,

plus it is not showing the GTI tailgate badge either, so yep I believe it is the clipper model.
it may be the clipper stickers were remvoved during a respray.
I can supply those for you if need be.
