Newbie needing some help!

Hi guys joined the forum today, would like to start with saying Hello to everyone. Seems like a lovely forum!

Reason why I joined is because I am looking at buying my first car. But due to me just passing a couple months back and only being 17! insurance is being a bit of a pain. I've wanted a MK1 for a long time but never thought I could afford one.

I'm after a 1.3 8v model in a 3dr but I've been told by my uncle that his friend is selling a 1.6 GTI 8v. Really like the car but I want to find out what the insurance group it is, before I waste my time and his time to go view it. Tried looking all over the web, but I can't seem to find anything!

I also want to ask if I am elegible to get Classic car insurance, as the only time I will drive the car is on the weekend and won't be doing many miles with it.

Any info on this will be great. Also sorry if i've asked some silly questions  :banghead:

Thanks Peeps!

Hi and welcome aboard.

Good news we have a cars for sale section here and I am sure a look through there should help.

As for insurance some companies offer classic policies to people over 21, also they usually expect you to have acsess to another car, so the classic isn't your primary vehicle.

Try the site sponsored ones like Adrian flux, footman James, premium choice, but also check about on the net etc also try Peter best insurance services, they thrashed all the insurance companies for me this year.

I am not sure if there is a work around the insurance issue, no doubt others will add more info to shed a bit of light for you.
I agree a 1.3 etc is a good starting point insurance wise too. Could it be added to a multiple car policy etc with your family.
Having your own policy however brings you into earning the no claims bonus which should bring down your premiums later on.

Good luck

Hi,

Welcome! I am also new to the forum and just bought a Mk1 myself (haven't even collected it yet!). I don't know if I can really help however I am 19 and found that a lot of insurance companies don't offer classic car insurance to under 21/25yr. The best bet is to phone around, i know this is very time consuming but the only way to get a proper idea. I know that insurance for young drivers is sky high so personally I would recommend the 1.3L, but let me know if you can find a cheap quote! If your on your own policy then put as many named drivers on as you can as this can lower the cost.

I will soon have my car and my best insurance quote was around the £1000 mark, fully com on a MK1 GTI 1.8L, 2yrs no claims, garaged, limited to 6000miles per year as only a summer car. This was with HIC insurance - www.Hertsinsurance.com. but I'm still looking for a cheaper quote…. It just takes so long!  :banghead:
