newbie mk1 lover needs advice!
hey people, Ive been a fan of mk1s since a young age and since recently passing my test i think its time i invested in one as a project. Im looking to buy a gti and would ideally like to spend no more then two grand initially. First of all is this a realistic figure? Also, when buying what should i look out for?
All help n advice would be great!
Thanks

Firstly, WELCOME to the site.
Secondly, spend the next 3 hours having a good old trawl around the site. There are loads of very good threads that will not only inform and advise but make you wonder what the hell are you letting yourself in for

I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines

You'll easy get a tasty project for 2K or less mate. Have a look at the buyers guide on here, it is just a guide but well worth a read.
Good luck!

Good luck!

?2k should get you something pretty good! For that money it should have Tax&Test and probably just needing some TLC. The best advice is to get something with solid bodywork. Welding isn't much fun and, if your not doing it, could be expensive.
So make sure it's structurally sound, mechanicals are easy to sort.

good time to buy just now as xmas is coming and some people may need cash, if you are going to look at 1 the best areas to check are the axle mounts, put your hand under at rear of sill and have a good poke at sill and axle mount in behind fuel pump etc, front of sills can get soft due to jacking in wrong place, pre wax models 1982 and before may have issues in the inner wings , and sunroof models may have issues in the sunroof aperture and the A/ door panels, any other areas will be visible to the eye like sills, door bottoms tailgate etc, most parts are available for them through ebay, crazyquiff on here or gsf etc, genuine wings are hard to source as are genuine fuel pump cradles, although crazy's do good substitutes 8)

You wouldn't get that for ?2k
Nice looking car But you could get a good, solid, reliable car with money left to start enhancing it
Don't rush into it, have a look round and see what's available.

As you've probably seen, cab's are cheaper than tin tops, so that might be best depending on how much you wante to spend.
For a pretty much perfect tin top you'd expect to spend ?5K+, any less then they'll probably need work unless you're very lucky. Depends if you want a project car or not, which also depends if you have somewhere where you can work on it an can weld (or want to learn). However a project car can easily cost the same in the end depening on the standard you restore it to. The advantage is that the cost is spread out, the disadvantage is you won't be able to drive it whilst it's in bits and you may never get around to actually finishing it (the reason I decided to pay the money and get something that was already sorted).

cabs will cost a lot more to insure!!!! My ex went from a mk2 valver to a gli cabby and paid nearly 400 more, that was with 2years no claims and no accidents.
initial cost is less, but thats due to them being made for so long! but tbf 2k will get a very good cabby as long as you check it everywhere!!!! def take a magnet to check for filler.

im really not a fan of the cabrolet, some of them look really nice but everyone i speak to tells me to stay well away. The tin top just looks so much better in my opinion. I dont want something i have to work on too much coz im not mechanically gifted and my knowledge on cars isnt great so ill be depending a lot on family members who have worked as mechanics
