Newbie looking for a mk1?

Hi, I'm new to this so bear with me. I currently drive a mk4 tdi, but have always wanted a mk1 gti.
Can I have some idea what I should expect for ?750 - ?1000? I don't mind some hard work to get a car back up to scratch, but I don't want a complete rust bucket.
What do I need to be looking for when buying one of these, any problems etc?
