Need help with future MK1 Golf...

I'm new around here, but have occasionally had a look around the site but felt it was time to get involved…

I have wanted to get a mk1 Golf since i was interested in cars and now it has got to the point were i am so close to getting one but there are a few things i would like to know first…

I'm 19 years old (20 in December) and have been driving since i was 17. I currently drive a 1.1 Saxo that i have had since i first started driving and the last 6months i have literally hated this car, don't get me wrong the car is fine but i have just had enough of it and wanted to get a mk1 Golf for ages

I was just wondering the reliability of the car and what some of the major problems would be, i would be looking to rat pack the car…not to a ridiculous extent but it has always been a passion of mine and I love the mk1 so it would be perfect.

I don't know an awful lot about fixing cars or doing much to them unless it is audio based, however i have a bunch of mates who know all sorts and my dad owns a Vauxhall VX220 which he has worked on in the past so combined i believe that most mechanical work wouldn't be a problem and as i have to commute to London for work i wouldn't really be driving long distances, it would literally just be for the running around in and also the joy of having the car.

My parents (mainly mum) aren't to happy in me getting a mk1 as she feels i will just get annoyed if it doesnt start or breaks down needing repairs, but i have told her they are pretty reliable lol but would just like someone to clarify what i would need to know about mk1s that would be able to help me when i do get one  8)

Also i have looked around at mk2 Golfs a bit as i think that would persuade my parents a bit more as they aren't as old and look more reliable, but a mk1 would be perfect…

So yer anyone who could help me out and just give me the basic noob facts about a first time buyer of a mk1 would be really appreciated, sorry if there are a million of these threads or if this isn't the right place to ask…and i can guarantee once i get the car i will become a regular face on this forum  :D

Cheers, Sam
