As a guideline, car trailers cost around ?900 secondhand, so I always end up hiring one. I'm lucky enough to have a place nearby. Their rates are ?25 for a 9-5 hire, ?30 for 24 hour hire and ?45 for weekend (pick up Friday afternoon and drop off Monday morning). Trailer hire places tend to get booked up for weekend stuff but midweek isn't too bad. Bear in mind to tow a car, you're looking at obviously the weight of the car + 420kg for a 14ft trailer (which would mean the car sticks out beyond the edges of it or 500kg for a 16 foot trailer (nicer to tow, more stable, and can load the car easier and position it nicer).

Or see if you can get a spectacle lift.  They simply lift the front 2 wheels off the ground and aren't as big or heavy as a full car trailer.

Car needs MoT and tax, to be towed using a spectacle lift though…. Are you sure you mean spectacle lift, this is the hydraulic lifter used on recovery trucks. The thing which attaches to the front wheels and can be towed, is a towing dolly. There's basically 2 types - ones with the wheels inside the towed cars' and ones with the wheels outside.

Car is not MOT'd, insured or taxed. So do I definatly need a trailer?

It definitely needs to have all its wheels off the ground, on the public roads. So, trailer, low loader car transporter.

Yes I meant spectacle lift - where the front wheels are lifted off the ground and the car follows on behind, i.e. very different to an a-frame or dolly.

I've borrowed one off a friend a few times, I've seen them used (on a much bigger scale) for truck recovery.  I presumed they would be legal as the car has no independant movement (such as on an a-frame) but thinking about it now with no mot how do you know the rear axel isn't going to collapse.

In that case I guess the only option for collecting a car with no mot is a full sized car trailer then.

get the yellow pages out and call around, try the small indipendant places as these are normally way cheaper than the big boys, my guy charges ?35 for a full day for a twin axel 2t capacity trailer, used him a number of times and hes always good to us, woth getting a good repour with your local place  :)

sooooooooo, how do you plan on using a trailer if you don't have a tow bar?

you can't tie it to your towing eye you know! :dontknow:

Just seen this thread, following on from your other one in general chat. I didn't realise the car had no engine, how would you tow that anyway? surely the driveshafts would obliterate the surrounding bodywork?

My mates mum has a towbar on her car but its only a 1.1

Driveshafts are not in the car, so is towable….but its highly illegal

I've used this guy before, he brought my notch up from Kent. Had to wait a few weeks though as he fits in collection around other jobs that take him to that part of the country, otherwise it isn't profitable for him. So you might have to wait a while till he's going up to Newcastle?

Still shouldn't cost you more than ?100 to get it to pontefract.

If the driveshafts aren't on the car, you can't roll it very far or very fast, because the front wheel bearings aren't supported properly.

I was going to suggest this guy, he was by far the cheapest i got quoted for recoverys. Your best bet is to write a set ebay message out and put in there you are willing to let them work it in on other jobs if it makes it cheaper, then just message them all individually and watch the quotes come in, you will be surprised how cheap some of them will be if they have a collection or delivery in the area
