my wee golfs now a 5 speed

ah im contented now. ive just put a 5 speed box into my 1982 1.6 diesel golf, new seals an bushes into gearbox, new clutch while i was at it, new oil, needed a 5 speed mount, got away with using my own linkages, ajusting them was not to bad, trial an errror is best advise.. some great advise on this website, rubjonny and bert. thank you.. cant wait untill the summer now so i can cruise the big roads in fifth gear :mrgreen:

would it make much difference to the job putting a 5 speed in a petrol rather than diesel or is it the same (job wise)

Again Bert is the Man for this ans, however i think it depends on the engine

If its a 1.1 then there are mods to be made however i know someone here did it

Yeah, 'i think' if its a 1.1 you have to change the steering rack as well  :dontknow: . but im not sure about the 1.3?

it a pig of a job however once done should be a pleasure to drive with a 5 speed

yeah

yeah i do belive you have to change rack or weld a braket on for a petrol 1.1 an 1.3 but would be wort it for sure.. reasons i can think of are noise, economy, less wear on engine and crusing the big roads at 70-80 with ease  :dance:   happy new year to all
