my mk1 keeps splitting hoses!!! aghhhhhh!!

went to bugjam, 2 hour drive, went fine, little golf flew!! kept up with my mates s3, and 4motion.
got there, turned engine off 'BANG' smoke/steam came bellowing from my engine.. investigated and found that the water pipe that comes out of the block into the heater matrix had split about 3 inch! knackered. so im stuck at bugjam and need a hose, ended up getting a pal to bring me my spare as he was coming to bugjam too. (thank god) fitted new pipe, antifreeze etc.
driving home, get 2 miles from my house, 'BANG' same thing different hose!! this time its the large one from the top of the rad. why??????????? is it simply cuz my hoses are standard and old, so replace them with silicome? or is there an underlying problem???

I know how you feel mate i had the hose off the block to metal pipe split then few weeks later on the big fat tour another hose split which we repaired with super glue and gaffer tape did the job to get us home from scarborough, i have just got all nw hoses bought to replace them all as inside they looked old so presum the rest will shortly catch up, i would say just replace all your hoses for new ones if you dont know how old your current ones.  Im no mechanic so dont know how to answer if theres an underlying problem i was concerned too but everything seems to be fine so starting with the replacement of hoses

unfortunately mate… thats a common sign for a head gasket….

thats showing theres too much pressure in the system from the cylinders.

check for a yellow substance in the oil AND you could open the water bottle and check to see if theres oil in there.

sorry to be the potential bringer of bad news mate  :(

Sorry to high jack again but we thought that was what was wrong with mine as I had mixing and the oil and water turning sludgie, had a new oil cooler fitted as current one had some corrosion i had had my head gasket done start of year and when it was checked over and tested when the cooler was changed the pressure test came back saying no issues, so hopefully the new cooler and putti g my radiator back onto automatic fan switch the problem will be resolved.

Oy other thing I was told was that maybe one of the lines in the block could have cracked but I'm no expert so unsure if it's going to mix again or hopefully new hoses new oil cooler better radiator control/cooling and another good flush through should resolve it

Yep same head gasket is just not what you need, have it pressure tested and your oil cooler checked and replace the hoses also check your rad is kicking in and cooling as it should, I'm putting mine back to automatic as it's a right pain having it on An independent switch no idea why the last owner had it like that, just need to find an inline thermostat and rig it back up as the rad itself has been taken from an unknown car nrg re cored and refurb it for me and unsure what it was fro
it's nice and long though for my 2.0 16

Hi mate my blocks an Audi 80 2.0 16v block so iordered every hose need from Audi dealer will probably be taking some back as not all will fit but got the lot so I had them, the other hoses will then be sourced by friend who does te work for me, I could t find samco kits so that's why I went to Audi and they will refund any hose I don't need

well i took my car to a tunung company a few weeks ago, and im sure he pressur tested it there, and he commented on how good the compression was, would i loose power if the head gasket was going??? i have no idea how old the hoses are, but i just find it highly strange how 2 hoses blew this weekend...

Is the car over heating at all? If it's not, and it's popping hoses, I'd take a stab at there being an air lock somewhere in the system each time you replace the hose, flush the system and refill it.

Cheers,

Josh.

no its not overheating, it gets up to temp pretty quick tho, but doesnt overheat.
ill get some silicone hoses and see what happens,

In that case i'd say you've possibly got an air lock after replacing the hoses.

Feel the thermostat pipe hose near where it connects and also further along it, if it's colder in the middle and away from the thermostat housing then it's a sign of an air lock as the water isn't travelling all the way through the pipe.

Often overlooked is the rad cap, although this is highly unlikely to be the cause of any overpressure, it should release excess pressure in the system and stop hoses from blowing.

well a friend of mine is top mechanic at audi, so he chemical tested it earlier, and it came bk perfect, so he thinks that maybe the thermostat could be sticking, so im guna get a new water pump and thermostat from gsf. £35.00 for both.
them silicone hoses. hopefully problem solved..
