Did you rebuild the engine or just paint on outside?

Oil pump went last year (and subsequently lost oil pressure and big ends went smash!) so was forced to completely rebuild the engine. Rebored, new pistons, head skimmed, new valves, guides, seals, oil pump, water pump, the lot.

top work, did you remove engine or work around it ?
When the engine was out getting its second lease of life, the block was painted, the rocker cover and cylinder head painted, but that was all. Everything else was restored with the engine in situ. (alternator, oil cooler, inlet manifold, brake servo, master cylinder, metering head etc.

Just to double check one thing, as I had a scary moment a little while back - did you get the rocker cover shot-blasted, and if so did you mask off / clean out the breather?

That's really impressive - as said before it looks like it just came from the factory 8)

thanks Rich. much appreciated.
well, when I say painted the rocker cover, I really mean bought a brand new one And yes, dont worry, very clean. I remember steve mathews always going on about how the breather was a big (largely unknow) problem with early VW's.

I notice you're dipstick is the later type, is this an addition by you? My '83 has the one harder to get at as its much lower in the bay.

Yes it was. When I was looking for a brand new one, this is all I could find. Will be replacing it eventually with the smaller one.
Thanks for the comments mate.
